What is so bad about 4chan?

Imagine, if you will, that there was a city in a sewer into which all of the horrible-ness of the internet slowly drained. A horrible place made mostly of human waste and filth, ruled by few, if any, laws. In this strange stew many things are born, most bad, some good, a few even great. But let me reiterate my first point, most bad, and a fair amount even horrible.
You could, if you so chose, go there in search of the good or great things, but the truth is that most of the good things leave 4chan, and flow about the internet anyways... so the only real reason to go there is that you want to wallow in the filth in which these things are born, and help give shape to them.
Personally, I would recommend against it, but to each their own.

I call that honesty. You strip away all the bullshit (name, post count, avatar, signature (-big mike), etc) and people actually do become exactly what they are. Its beautiful and disgusting at the same time. The fact a good amount of people just hide behind anonymity (the same way they hide behind names, post counts, avatars, signatures (-big mike), etc) is a little disappointing, but its to be expected. The fact one could report you and moderators would likely react strongly is something blessedly absent from 4chan. Most the people around here are afraid of being honest for any number of reasons. Their "reputation" (spoiler: barely anyone will remember you), moderator wrath, etc. A tour of 4chan should be required of everyone. Also, desensitization is only a bad thing when it causes you to ignore reality.

It's just a website, most people who say it's evil just don't care for its content. It's mainly a porn website from what I've heard, and while I've personally never been there, I do know people who have. From what I've heard /b/ is the real problem, and is most likely what people avoid (although apparently the other sections aren't much better).

Yeah I don't like their mob mentality either to be honest. This whole "we are legion" bullshit...you're not. /ck/ isn't bad either, I've learned to make quite a bit of food from there. Random has a lot of crap, but there are some good stuff that pop up every now and then. The "ruining of peoples lives" bit usually comes from people going there and posting screenshots from their Facebook account talking crap about their friends etc. and don't get rid of enough information in the image so they go after whoever posted the image instead of the intended target. Or, the stuff in the image is bad enough to get people angry. Either it's your own fault, or one of your friends' fault. Not defending them, but a large portion of the blame usually rests with someone else as well.
I'm sick of seeing people running down 4chan and making them seem like the bad guys, I see them as a group of like minded people who provide a free service, the stay on the internet as a constant reminder that you CAN AND WILL be held responsible for what you say on the internet, it's cold, it's remorseless and it is random, a collective vigilante hive mind, cleaning up gutters of the internet, their own base being just as vile as the people they sabotage, a place that repulses the weak and the strong moral-less trolls are left over to patrol the internet for these people, people that shouldn't be allowed to roam the internet proclaiming themselves as better, they are the internet's dark knight, without morales, without care, without regard, no law, no code, we are anonymous, we are legion, we never forgive, we never forget. Also...they share porn...ALOT of porn, not all CP like some seem to be suggesting, in fact in all the time i've know and surfed 4chan, CP is one of the few things that you will get the Ban Hammer for posting.
4chan is fine. Certain boards on 4chan aren't for everyone. I don't like the board entirely dedicated to anime porn for example.

Nothing. People assume that because a couple of the boards are bad (/b/ and /r/ in particular)that the whole site is.
Nothing is wrong with 4chan. People that are offended or shocked by the site are either new to the internet, have thin skin, or are exaggerating. The occasional good thing to pass out of 4chan is usually ruined by a sea of unfunny demotivational posters and emulation that unfunny people parrot off for years afterwards.
