Count me as a vote. I enjoy quite a lot of anime, including the two you've watched so far, but the caustic comments you've made are still amusing to read.

Well that is the problem right there. You probably watched some of the worst animes ever made. You should watch something that is actually considered good. Just because something is popular does not make it good.
Alright. Recommend me some anime and I'll watch it.
Garzey?s Wing! Do Garzey?s Wing! Trust me, you will hate me after watching it!

Well I personally haven't watched these but people usually highly praise Bleach, Neon Genesis Evangelion and Ghost in The Shell. Berserk is also highly praised. Probably your best bet is to just google top 100 anime and see which ones crop up the most near the top.

Didn't you see what that series did to Spoony?! How could you wish that on another human being? D:

Yeah, but that doesn't work so well because Naruto somehow ALWAYS finds its way near the top. "top x-number" lists can go die in a gutter somewhere.

There is nothing great about anime in general. Depending on your tastes however certain animes might be considered great. Personally I'm not the biggest fan of anime but I have watched a few different series, all very different.

Out of all I have watched Death Note is probably my favourite and thats because it felt as though it wasn't ment to be an anime (thats probably why they made two live actions films). It was clever, different and it had lots of plot twists that I rarely saw coming. Plus, unlike a lot of animes the characters were all well designed and they all had their own unique personalities which, only made the show better (there were of course still a few character that you could argue fit a stereotype found in animes).

What I'm trying to say is though that like any other genre of film, anime can and sometimes is great, however lots of series let the genre down. So you can argue that anime isn't as good as western film but at no genre is perfect, they all contain shows and movies that suuccckkk!

No way, dude! That google method is far from accurate...here's a few lists...

I'll let he list inconsistencies speak for themselves. If you do insist on using these lists, do you homework first!

The above two links are good places to get a bit of info on what you're about to watch before you waste your time with something bad.

Kinda echoing what others said, but:

Samurai 7, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

Samurai Champloo is by the same studio that did Cowboy Bebop.

I wouldn't rec Death Note, it's kind of cheesy and is entirely made of ridiculous schemes.

Fuck knows. I have several friends who think it's the dogs bollocks but I can't stand it, myself. I have watched a couple and they drove me mad. When the original Japanese voices are used, the subtitled translations were the funniest part, which isn't saying much and why is it that every Japanese female has the same, awful, shrieking voice? I couldn't make a noise like that if someone ran over my foot in a leaking helium tanker!

Being interested in cars, I thought I'd give Initial D a try and watched the lot (not all at once) and, yes, some of the driving sequences were fucking brilliant but each and every one of the characters I wanted to punch in the face...a lot. Plus who thought it would be exciting to fill a car / racing themed anime with a load of rich-kids talking such huge amounts of bollocks for half an hour before showing a bit of driving. It really drove me mad because they even broke up the race sequences to insert even more waffling that did sod all for my mood and enjoyment of the series. Picture it: Two cars are racing down a twisty-turny mountain road at night. Despite the threats of oncoming traffic (they are public roads) and plummeting down the mountainside if you cock it up, the cars slide from corner to corner, using some outrageous but still beleiveable (mostly!) techniques. Once driver hooks his wheels into a gutter to allow him to make a turn at high-speed, thus overtaking his opponent in the process. Now you are talking! I am on the edge of my seat, fists clenched and tense as hell, not even able to think of what the drivers will think of next. Then up pops Richtwat McBlabbermouth who then takes ten minutes to explain what just happened to some micro-minded, slack-jawed numbnuts who really should have been able to work it out for themselves. I don't need a ten-minute breakdown of gutter-hanging and the driver's mental reasoning for coming up with the maneuver. I saw it and thought it was fucking genius and then along comes Mr. Frigginknowall-san to kill the mounting excitement dead. Again.

I think if you cut out all the waffle it would do the series a world of good, it would have still made perfect sense but it would have only lasted around an hour.

I've tried watching others but after just a few minutes I found myself thinking that I'd rather be doing my laundry...or vigorously rubbing my scrotum with 60-grit sand-paper. The only thing I liked about Gunsmith Cats is the car and the noise it made.

I'm not bashing on people who like it. I freely accept people like different things and all power to you but, like the OP, I can't find anything about Anime that is remotely appealing. You can try telling me that all anime is not the same and how I don't "get it" but save your...breath(?)...because I've heard it all a million times. I TRIED to "get it" and I didn't, much in the same way I think a V8 is the greatest sound in the world and yet some people still think the Toyota Prius is in any way environmentally friendly. Swings and Roundabouts, ya know?

PS No, seriously. I don't like it and if you do, fine, just don't rag on me or tell me I'm wrong. I've not done anything of the sort to you.

Just watch Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star and Fooly Cooly, then never bother with anime again. It's absolute shite.

Well, i'm not a seasoned anime watcher or a die hard fan, but i do watch some.

I think theres a few things you need to understand first.

Anime is not really a genre, it's a form of presentation, a visual style, just like 3d animation. So one anime can have as much and as little in common with anotehr as western style cartoons (compare disney to southpark for instance)

As for some of the things you say in the OP.
I've seen some of Naruto and Code Geaas, and both of them are on-going shows, you'll understand as much of them by watching a random episode as you will of watcing a random episode from the middle of Lost, heroes or prison break.
The individual episodes are part of an ongoing story, they're not stand alone stories with the same cast like south park, or a sitcom like friends, where theres continuity, but each episode can more or less stand on its own due to beeing based on the humor, with the story beeing a sub-element.
They're a continousus story, which you more or less need to watch from the start to understand proberbly. I dunno if some animes work more as stand alone episodes (well Boondocks does, with a few throwbacks) but the ones i've watched are continousus, and wouldn't maek sense if yousaw a random episode from the middle of it.

So whats so great about anime? the same thing thats great about other series, whether animated in 2d/3d or live action. The power to offer a longer story than a 2 hour movie could. Some suck at it, others don't.

For the most part, I appreciate Anime as a genre because it does so many strange things that absolutely no other medium would ever touch. This, obviously, has good and bad consequences. If you can dig through the awful ones, there are a few gems here and there. Wolf's Rain, for instance, is most definitely worth watching.

But in the end, Sturgeon's Revelation and all that. It just takes some looking.

Wait wait wait, were these the first episodes of their respective shows? Because I don't even watch Anime, and I can tell that might be the problem here. They tend to require you to watch them in order, and if the club popped in a couple random episodes then that would explain the whole "the hell is going on?" thing.

It's pretty memetastic and funny in that light, but idk, it gets painful pretty fast.

If it comes to ridiculous OTT shows I'd have lots of silly shit to recommend, like Cromartie High School.

Hellsing is my recommendation. Hellsing Ultimate (better animation, better plot) if you've the time.

Over the top fun vampire on vampire overpowered badassery always seems to hit the spot

Here's an anime recommendation i found on another thread. Seems like it might be something worth looking into.

I do and I submit Baccano! to you.
Synopsis (via MyAnimeList): During the late 1930s in Chicago, the transcontinental train, Flying Pussyfoot, is starting its legendary journey that will leave a trail of blood all over the country. At the same time in New York, the ambitious scientist Szilard and his unwilling aide Ennis, are looking for missing bottles of the immortality elixir. In addition, a war between the mafia groups is getting worse. On board the Advena Avis, in 1711, alchemists are about to learn the price of immortality.

Watch it in English.

Final Neon Genesis update:

Oh man. Shinji just got his ass whooped. Is he going to get up and save the day? Is Neo-Tokyo going to be destroyed? Will this tension be resolved?

The answer to all these questions is apparently in order, no, no and no.

Shinji wakes up in a bed. The city is not destroyed. The giant monster has vanished, and the blue haired ditz is being intentionally vague.

Am I going to find out what happened?

I guess not because the credits just rolled.

So all in all we can sum Neon Genesis Evangelion episode 1 by saying that:

-It introduced us with a whiny protaganist
-The only interesting character had maybe a minute of screen time
-Nobody did anything of value
-No tension was resolved.

Awesome. Great pilot episode guys. Y'all really make me want to watch more.

I'm going to keep going at this though. I'm not going to stop until I find an anime that I like.

Girlfriend is holding up two DVDs. Deathnote and Cowboy Beebop. Which one should I pick?
I think the problem you have is that you're trying to judge the entire show on the basis of one episode.
Am I going to find out what happened?

I guess not because the credits just rolled.
Of course you're going to find out what happened. They explain that in the next episode.

It seems you're not accustomed to anime's way of telling stories; and this might be part of why you have trouble enjoying it. You won't get any interesting look into the main-character's psychology(what the show is about) until a good few episodes into the series.

-The only interesting character had maybe a minute of screen time
-Nobody did anything of value
-No tension was resolved.
NGE isn't very fast paced. If you don't like the tension not getting resolved at the end of each episode, it's probably not for you. They don't really do anything of value for the next six episodes.

I saw someone in this thread saying that the father got a lot of screentime through the show. Well, he doesn't for the first six episodes; so clearly some development happens that brings the father more into the spotlight.

I, personally, have only watched five or six episodes of NGE, and I could not get myself to enjoy it. It may very well not be for you. It's not the kind of anime that hooks you and makes you want to watch on (For the first few episodes at least).

I haven't read the entire thread, so I don't know if you've tried out Death note or Cowboy bebop, but Death note is a good exciting/entertaining series, i.e. it's the kind of series where you want to know what happenes next. You might be a bit older than the target demographic though.

I haven't watched Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, but from what I hear, it's pretty much a parody of anime conventions; so you won't be able to enjoy it if you're not experienced with anime.
Naruto, that you said you watched, is intended for boys aged 12-13. Basically, it's one step up from Pokémon. It's not very surprising that you did not enjoy it.

As for Code Geass, it seems like you watched only one episode. In the middle of the series even. As others have pointed out; anime can be very canonical in its presentation, and in the case of Code Geass, you need to watch it from the very beginning. Code Geass is not necessarily the kind of anime that hooks you from the start either. It sort of require that you involve yourself for a bit, and accept that presenting the setting can be sort of mundane; but once you get into it, it's rather good.

The reason I like anime, is that it has presented me with the deepest, most exciting, and most touching stories I have seen in any medium or genre.
Clannad (a great anime, but only for the experienced watcher), is the only story, presented in any form, that has made me shed a tear. And believe me, I do not cry easily. I was fighting it all the way too.

The problem, once again, is that you seem to be determined to only sample a single episode from each series, and try to judge the genre/medium on that ground. That simply won't do. Before you make an official statement on the quality of anime; please watch at least one series to its very end.

Of course, there is a lot of shit within anime as well; just like with all other mediums/genres. The trick is avoiding all the bad stuff.

Please reply with any questions you may have, so I can explain my view on anime in more detail. I would really like to explain why I enjoy it, and how or what you should watch to maybe be able to enjoy it too.

Also: What that girl said to you was either "Kawaii desu" or "Kowai desu" which means either "that's/it's cute" or "that's/it's scary".

Taste I guess.
I don't get why anyone enjoys Friends, I think Sex and the City is a piece of shit, I hate all reality shows.
I'd rather watch Doom than Avatar....
