Hi guys, my birthday is coming up and i'm hoping to get an e-reader as my main present.
My friend has a kindle and I have used it briefly and was impressed, great battery, nice screen, great price on books, durable.... exactly what i'm looking for...

However i'ts a bit expensive, even the cheapest model will run you about $110/£80. This is a bit too expensive, are there any e-readers that you guys have used or heard about that are as good as a kindle?

Many thanks for your help

Kobo [http://www.kobobooks.com/ereaders?__utma=1.1432417664.1339794605.1339794605.1339794605.1&__utmb=1.2.10.1339794605&__utmc=1&__utmx=-&__utmz=1.1339794605.1.1.utmcsr=google|utmccn=%28organic%29|utmcmd=organic&__utmv=1.|1=d=00000000-0000-0000-0000-ffffffff0000=1^2=a=kobo=1^3=customerid=00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000001=1&__utmk=212760980] is another possibility, a tad cheaper but not much.

I've looked a lot into the newest Sony PRS. It's a bit more expensive than others but it has WiFi, .pdf capabilities, an internet browser and is based on Android so you can actually trick it and install apps and such.
Though the e-ink is probably not the best thing for surfing because it always refreshes the whole screen. I got a Samsung Galaxy Tab in the end.

The original Kindle is showing up on Amazon for $80 new on the U.S. internets, but apparently £89 at amazon.co.uk. That's kinda sucky.

I can't think of things that'd be cheaper. You might be able to find a really cheap off-brand Android tablet that'll run the Kindle app, but the battery life won't be nearly as impressive.

I looked into the Kobo and it looks impressive, it has a similar battery life to kindle, my only worry is that the prices of some of the books is crazy, do any of you guys own one and can let me know the general price?

Why not just get a phone/tablet? It may be a bit worse for battery life but you get a whole load of other functions & you don't have to worry about carrying two things around all the time.

I don't want a tablet or any of the features they offer, I want a replacement for the books I love to read but hate to lug around with me and store at home.
Plus the screen doesn't hurt my eyes to read rather than a tablet screen which reading text off of is a pain.

I have yet to see an ipad (or any other tablet) that can be used all day without recharging

I have a Kindle. Far exceeded my skepticism, and now I love it. Regular reader here.
