What is the best "Elder scrolls" game out of "Morrowind" "Oblivion" and "Skyrim"

I have played all of them and feel that my favorite is still by far "Morrowind". Don't get me wrong i enjoyed "Skyrim" but feel it has been dumbed down and simplified for the masses and that if you made a mistake in "Morrowind" it had real consequence.

My personal favorite is Oblivion, it was the one that first got me heavily into RPGs, but the answer to this question depends heavily on which one you played first and when. Skyrim was an improvement over Oblivion in every respect, but because I was 14 when it came out I played it much more than Skyrim.

Morrowind however, was just completely broken and unplayable. It had weird and interesting environments, but pretty much everything else was either as good as the future installments (Story-line, quests) or complete shit (Everything else in the game). People often times assume that the story-line and quests were amazing because they correlate their enjoyment of it with the games writing, when in truth its pretty much the same as Oblivion and Skyrim.

I thoroughly enjoyed Oblivion too, so I'd have to say that.

Plus I modded the crap out of it. I had Skyrim on Xbox and never actually played Morrowind, though it looks like I would've enjoyed it too if I had the chance. Can't say I'll try it now because like Oblivion, it doesn't seem to have aged well. I didn't like Daggerfall very much when I played it, but Arena was quite enjoyable for the few hours I've put into it.

Maybe if you ask me in a few weeks once I start playing Skyrim on PC, my opinion might change, but right now I'll stick to saying Oblivion was/is my favourite.

Pretty much this. I loved Oblivion and Skyrim, but Morrowind is just broken, I presume a lot of the respect for it comes from nostalgia.

I personally prefer Morrowind but I can't say it's the best. It's the best for me but that's not saying much.

I prefer Morrowind to Skyrim and I haven't played Oblivion.
The main reason for my preference is the world itself, which feels a lot more novel than Skyrim did, there were more original places, people and lore than Skyrim, which is a little too "let's just throw together some Vikings stuff" for my liking.
Also, the stealth (which is the only thing I ever use) was less completely overpowered in Morrowind.
I also think there is more to actually do in Morrowind, I had seen all I wanted to see and done just about every single faction in Skyrim in the same time it took me to do just the Thieves Guild and the Carmona Tong.

My order of preference:

6. Oblivion (solid gameplay but uninteresting locations and design)
5. Morrowind (the most interesting locations, design, and the most rewarding of the three but extremely flawed gameplay)
4. Skyrim (Oblivion's more focused and accesible gameplay with a much more interesting location and design)
3. Skyrim with mods
2. Oblivion with mods
1. Morrowind with mods.

I love all three, though.

Morrowind > Skyrim >> Oblivion.

Judging by standarts that existed when they were released. If Morrowind would be released today, I'd prolly skip it because of the combat system, graphics and such. Okay maybe not graphics. Morrowind's world looked way way way WAY better than boring Skyrim.

Oblivion is the one Elder Scrolls game I have played and never finished.

In terms of pure vanilla gameplay, I vastly prefer Skyrim over Oblivion, or Morrowind.

Oblivion and Morrowind simply have way to much wrong, or just plain broken, about their gameplay to be fun in vanilla form.

With mods its a toss up depending on what mods I put on which.

I never played Morrowind.
Out of the other two, I think Skyrim is a lot better than Oblivion. The setting was better, and the skills system in Oblivion was just broken.

I've never played Morrowind so I can't really vouch for it. When it comes to Skyrim and Oblivion however, I kind of have to go with Oblivion on this one. While I much prefer the combat and skill levelling in Skyrim, I thought Oblivion had a lot more to offer for me. There was a lot more variety in quests and enemies in Oblivion. In Skyrim it all seemed to follow the same formula of "Go into a dungeon, kill draugr, get item, leave through secret door." while in Oblivion you were slowly killing off people in a house one-by-one, sneaking back into prison to steal an Elder Scroll or killing villagers because the hallucinogenic tree-sap you drunk made them look like Goblins.

My post is biased as I bought Skyrim first and loving it bought Oblivion after. I want to play Morrowind but have never got around to buying it on Steam.
I didn't like Oblivion. It felt floaty as though you were in a dream, the interfaces were painful and the characters we just so ugly and annoying I cried when talking to them. However as I said this is probably because I played Skyrim first, which was released with 5 years of extra improvements.

There's just something about standing in Skyrim and looking around that feels awesome, regardless of how, when you actually have npc interaction the immersion falls apart.

Morrowind for sure, though I love the others as well. Nothing beats Morrowind's atmosphere.

Seeing as I haven't played Morrowind in a few years, it's easy for me to say Skyrim at the moment. It had an amazing world visualized, a great modding community right-off-the-bat, and the music was astounding, fully capable of standing up on its own. Morrowind, including nostalgia, was also a great piece of work and, at the time I played it, was amazing and I could not escape from that world for months. It was, in many ways, a gateway game for the many that I played after it (and modded as well).

I guess I would go for Skyrim if only for the better polish it has (PC version at least). With the same amount of mods running I get far fewer crashes with Skyrim than Morrowind. Plus, that music...

Oblivion, although good by itself, is harder to compare to the three. I guess that means Skyrim > Morrowind > Oblivion. Or maybe Skyrim/Morrowind > Oblivion. Why are we even comparing amazing games to each other? Seems too nitpicky for me.

I haven't played Morrowind, but I do plan to once I get Xbox Live, primarily because I learned I need a LIVE update to play original Xbox Games.

EDIT: Oh! and between Oblivion and Skyrim, well...

I like Oblivion for its lighter tone, interesting quests, and more expansive customization.

I like Skyrim for its combat, immersion, better characters, and lest we forget, Dragon Shouts.

So I guess I like Skyrim most because it has more of the things I like.

I think its the same reason why some people (including me) liked Risen, that is, even though the game itself had terrible gameplay and was so broken that you needed extensive modding just to get it to work, it still managed to capture someones attention by sheer virtue of its atmosphere.

Morrowind is a preference that I can easily understand, the objective aspects of video-games (how stable/broken a game is) can so easily be eclipsed by the subjective. Meaning, that it doesn't matter if a game is broken, it can still be enjoyed given that it succeeds at least in some areas.

Skyrim is a much better game on the surface but you run through the content too fast; even with all the random events and radiant quests. Not criticising it, just saying that it starts to feel fairly samey fairly soon. Oblivion is hideously ugly compared to Skyrim but the gameplay still works and it just seems to keep surprising me with various little things. For example, the events that occur in the small hamlet of Hackdirt. Also, the questlines in general just feel a lot more solid to me.

Morrowind. It wasn't perfect but the atmosphere and immersion were amazing. No fast travel; you really learn the terrain, layout of the cities, ship and longstrider network, and mages' guild locations. Also you really feel like an outsider.

Skyrim is great technically but loses a lot due to the atmosphere and plot of the game. Being the savoir of humanity from the very beginning, but people are still douches to you, takes a lot out of it for me. In Morrowind you are scum and treated as such.

You also have to put the games in perspective of when they came out. Morrowind was revolutionary. Skyrim was just another good game.

I think this topic will skew heavily based on age and the order in which games were played. I expect fans of the Elder Scrolls series who played all three games near when they were released will prefer Morrowind by a large margin, which tells you something about the impact of the games when they were released. It also gives a good indication of which game was "better" in a somewhat less subjective way.
