I have recently come to really enjoy BlazBlue, and before I spend a ton of time practicing with the regular PS3 controller. I would like to know if any of the escapist users that are experienced with fighting games and competitive play have a preference for what they use. So I can spend my time getting used to a new (and better for fighting games) controller. Instead of having to deal with the regular controller (which could be a disadvantage later).

If we're talking console and without arcade sticks, the ps3 controller really is without peer. Honestly though, I prefer a ps2 controller for them. I'm not all that into the L2 and R2 buttons on the ps3 controller for fighting games.

From what little I've handled, it's the MadCatz FightPad. I stayed the fuck away from it for quite a while, seeing as my experience with disc-based D-pads wasn't particularly encouraging, but after some time with it, I can't very well play Street Fighter or Tekken without it.

It depends on the game for me.

Games like Guilty Gear i would prefer to have an Arcade stick for it.
But games like MvC or TvC im fine with any controller.

Except for the Play Station Controller.
I don't like using a D-Pad for fighting games but, the Positions of the Analog Sticks on the PS controller forces me too.

If you are unwilling to buy an arcade stick, the PS3/PSP controller is hands down the best fighter controller. The D-pad is prefect for fighters and is ver responsive and delivers that important tactile feedback you need when playing. The segmented D-pad is just great....except if you wanna do a 720, but those a terribly rare and since you play Blazblue, I doubt you'll use Astral Heats much since it's not all that important.

And the whole 'advantage' of using a controller or stick is entirely subjective. That really boils down to personal preference and proficiency. I have been D-padding pretty much my entire life so I can pull off strings with ease on a D-pad ect... I've seen and know some highly talented fighters that use D-pad over arcade stick and it hardly hampers their skill.

Essentially if the controller has a D-pad like this, you are pretty set.

Pretty much what this person said here. I've just grown accustomed to the dang thing I mean, it has all the buttons set up to how I need them, it easily connects with my PC and any fighting game on it, and it just looks and feels good.
Though, the D-pad on it is kind of sucky for charge characters, but I work around it.

Really? I find it downright fantastic for charge characters.

I personally find it the best for well..basically the character on the one I have, Zangief. I can perform full circles, double circles, or half circles, like a beast with the dang thing. But the charge part might be novice stuff on my part, since I've just starting taking charging seriously while trying to work on my new main in Vega. I try to charge well, but I find the D-pad a bit too slippery or something, causing my charges to not work...that and it kills my thumb/wrist x-x

Interesting coincidence. Vega's my best character, and I had that control problem as well. For a little while. Practice weeds it out quickly.

I haven't used a fight pad but from just looking at it, it looks kinda awkward... mainly for ultras. How would you do it exactly? I'm imagining you slide your thumb round and press all three, but that sounds like (to me) it would be difficult to do in the heat of combat.
I like how LB and LT on the 360 presses all three for you, makes for quick ultra reactions.
(And lazy EX ones)

Ahh, here is the thing though, the LB and LT buttons are mapped to the triggers at the top. So..
Left Trigger=PPP
Right Trigger=KKK
Making Ultras easy as hell...except for Vega's which i still need more practice on

Oh, right. And yeah those weird charge triangle ones are annoying I got them down in my quest to get all characters to C rank. It's a great way to practise with all the characters.

The Mad Catz arcade sticks are amazing. They range from about $130-150. They're kinda pricey, but they last a long time. (They also have different ones. I've seen Street Fighter themed ones, and Marvel vs. Capcom, and even Tekken.)

There are also certain Hori arcade sticks. They're about $50, and are smaller and more compact.

Of course its an arcade stick, although I'm crap with them. But if we go by console controllers its either early PS1 (light because of the wire and no analog sticks on the early models) or the Genesis/MegaDrive 6-button controller because it has a decent D-pad and, duh, 6 buttons on the front. Of the modern consoles I'd say it's the PS3 controller though I'm not a fan of the analog sticks and the trigger buttons. It's just not great for fighting games.
