for me, it was the elder scrolls 3: morrowind. it was such an amazing world, and so revolutionary. i played it from the time it came out, up until oblivion was released, and i liked morrowind alot more, so much that im willing to let the terribly combat animation slide.

zelda: majora's mask
in no other game, the world & NPCs were so alive. (because of the 3-day structure, each person had some very very real stuff to do on those days, which you could influence)
And because it was not a big, epic, endless world, it was actually warm, cosy, friendly, intimate.

EDIT: hey person under me, you're stealing my lines :p

Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines.

still one of my favourite games ever. easily in the Top 5. Once I've upgraded my computer I'm going to play through it again (for what would be maybe the sixth time).

(followed closely by another Troika game; Arcanum: Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura

P.S. I'm assuming this DOESN'T include point and click adventures (these are 'role play' after all)?

If it includes adventures, my list would be entirely different. But here goes--

Panzer Dragoon Saga, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, Vagrant Story, Disgaea: Hour of Darkness.

I've never played a Western RPG for more than 5 minutes without nodding off. Here's hoping Fallout will change all that when I receive it through the post.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Good character customization, tons of side quests, lots of exploration, excellent writers, and a huge voice acting budget.

Favorite thing to do; get really fat and parachute off the mountain in my underwear. Don't tell me you haven't ever wanted to do that in real life.

(now who's going to mention witcher?)

Zelda Majora's Mask and Final Fantasy 12 are the only RPG's I really bothered to complete 100% , so that would make them the best of my collection.

Oh I loved that game. People said it was the biggest failure in the zelda franchise but those people don't know a good RPG if it splunked them in the face.

Suikodens I, II and V. I also liked Wild Arms 1, Wild Arms 3 and the first KotOR.

I can't stand morrowind or oblivion. Freedom is good, but then there's too much freedom for me...I wasn't a fan of the lack of real direction (I may be a noob on that though)

Oh yes, this isn't which one you don't like >_>

My best? I LOVED Kotor 1, so much of it was great. I was all like Revan and stuff (despite Revan being a girl in the sequel)

Second would be mass effect...But the obvious sequel setup makes the game build up with a not so satisfying ending...It was also short

Tales of Symphonia baby. Now I know its not the greatest of JRPGs but hell it had to be good to have me play the game SEVEN times over thanks to its great replay value.

Planescape Torment, Fallout, Arcanum, Vampire Bloodlines, Fallout 2

Most of the time in that order. I prefer dialogue, depth and character over plot and action.

Spend an awful lot of time in Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion too, but only in tourist mode. Those games are a bit like leaning back in an easy chair with a good old whiskey and staring at my ship orbitting and mining in Eve. Not really playing the game but just relaxing while I enjoy the scenery.

LoZ: Majora's Mask (yeah me too). To me that has been the most sureal gaming experience I have ever had, VERY good character interaction. Vagrant Story is one I shouldn't forget to mention.

Since all the epic ones like Planescape and Fallout have been brought up, I think some props ought to go to the gold standard:

Diablo I & II.

Both games are like crack AND the plot is pretty cool.
