I haven't seen this up there, so I'm throwing it out for good measure.

It is absolutely criminal that more people haven't played a JRPG called Baten Kaitos for the Gamecube/Wii. The game has pre-rendered animated images for backgrounds and uses a card based system of battle. Okay, now that those of you who base your entire grading system on graphics and voice acting have left, I can get to the good parts. The areas are way more memorable and captivating than any 3d rendered final fantasy scene that I have ever seen. The towns are original, and I went throughout the entire game with a sense of "I honestly don't know what the next place is going to be like." You go to a city made entirely out of sugared cakes and eat your way out of a house to avoid being beheaded for God's sake. The characters are not only very developed, but fluid, believeable entities who make you feel as though they are actually asking for your opinion at times and aren't following some pre-scripted scenario. At the end of this game, I caught myself waving to the screen in a heartfelt goodbye and in the middle I actually felt angry and frustrated at the story and not at the battle or controls.

Up for seconds are Tales of Symphonia and Wind Waker.

Planescape: Torment. Easily the best Traditional CRPG I have ever played. The story is sensational, combat and gameplay is enjoyable, the characters are amazing, and the difficulty is perfect.

If you have never played this game before you owe it to yourself to get it somehow.

My close second is Arcanum.

There are some obvious classics here that I too loved playing and still love playing whenever I get a chance, but while I will always such classics like Mario RPG, Diablo, Chrono Trigger, and Fallout I'm going to be a bit daring and say that one of my favorite RPGs has to be Legend of Legaia for the PS1. The story was decent, not great and not horrible at the same time, but what I loved about it was the combat system. It was something new and unique in the bland turn based combat system that was infamous with other RPGs at the time. I just found myself enjoying the game from start to finish, in fact I actually beat that game before FF7. It was a shame though when the sequel came out and ended up being nothing like the first one, made me a bit upset

i JUST registered because i saw how interesting this post was. at first, i couldn't come up with any games, but after reading all the posts i remember playing some great games. i actually still have most of these games and my saved data on memory cards. thanks to all those who already mentioned these games, brings back good memories.

Star Ocean: Second Story - first game that i spent +150 hours, and i still haven't beaten it. so much to do, customizations and exploration. i've always wanted to play the 3rd one, but never got to it.

Breath of Fire 3: one of the first rpg games i truly enjoyed. i believe i quit playing for a couple years and then, finally, beat it. i played part of the 4th one(and i think i have it, somewhere) and i didn't like it.

Final Fantasy 8,9, and 10, but especially
Final Fantasy 7: i remember playing this game when i didn't have PS, at my cousin's house. i died about 5 times at the first boss (i was like 9 years old, i don't think i even knew what a rpg was at that time) and never got past it. couple years later i picked it up with a friend and i played it on and off for years. imo its the best FF i've played (i haven't played the ones before it, FF1-FF6).

Suikoden II: i think it was Suikoden II, i can't remember. it was on PS and it was one of those games that i played hours on end. i remember going crazy when i got my own castle, lol. it was freakin awesome. unfortunately, i don't think i finished it.

Xenogears: awesome game, i loved the whole atmosphere of the game. i don't know why i hear bad things about it.

Legend of Legaia: another awesome game. as a previous poster noted, this game was unique with its creative battle system and unique story-line. the mist and those things that attached to your arm (i totally forget the details), oh yeah and those trees.

Diablo II and Diablo II: LoD
the game i have played the longest(about 4 years). the game seems so limited with only 5 Acts and point-and-click game style. but, surprisingly i found it to be fun rushing people from Act 1 to 5, normal to hell; creating a new character, which led to a totally different style of fighting; pwning ppl in the face in duels; using hacked items(when just about everyone else was using them) like hexes, AO_ith(not sure how it was spelled) equipment, white rings, and etc. before the 1.10 patch... good times.

KotOR I and II: when i began playing this game, i thought it was going to be just another rpg. man, was i in for a surprise. i was into both these games for awhile, trying out different mods and such.

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
i got the game a couple weeks ago. i think im over 100 hours into it(bah im too lazy to check). interestingly, that same cousin who had the PS(when i first played FF7) actually had Oblivion and i decided to try it out after watching him play. i totally got into it and decided to get it(luckily the GotY edition was out!)

Mass Effect: this is the reason why i have my xbox360 right now, seriously. when my cousin(yes, the same one) came over for the weekend i became obsessed with it and about a month later i got my xbox. i might've burned myself out on this game because i played so much within two weeks of getting it. but i love how it resembles KotOR, brings back memories.

i vaguely remember Chronotrigger and Chronocross. i remember in one of them you could run away from boss fights!

i probably forgot a bunch more games that i've played. this is all it for now.

I have to chime in with Earthbound. A game not afraid to poke fun while telling its story, and was even tactical in the ability to withstand a mortal hit if you healed before he scrolling counter hit 0. Plus, the crazy enemies like Hippies, Dali Clocks and gang members wielding pogo sticks and hula hoops...every new zone was a new reason to laugh, and yet you were still serious about saving the world at the end.

I played this isometric RPG called "Arcanium" which take place in a steampunk world. Something about it was just so cool that I had to finish the whole thing. Also the game Planetside (back when it first came out)... Something about being a soldier on an huge world, leveling up and getting more skill points. And pretty much kicking the shat out of the NC and .... V... purple guys. I've never been so in character in a mmorpg type game, combine that with the FPS nature of the game, and it was nearly perfect gaming bliss. And then SOE started actually listening to the vocal minority and they phucked it all up. Oh well. Terran Republic FTW!

I have to admit that it makes me a little sad to hardly see Vagrant Story mentioned on here. I thought it was a great game with impeccable story telling, characters you could really root for (or against for that matter)and a great tone to the whole game. Hands down I would have to say it's my favorite RPG ever. I really wish I still had a copy because it's so damned hard to find anymore.

The first RPG I played is still one of my all time favorites because I have fond memories playing it in olden times on the ye olde 386 with VGA-graphic card (ZOMG) and AdLib sound card (FOMG), I was probably ten or eleven years old, Ultima VI. I also really enjoyed the sequel Ultima VII.

But all time favorites are, but of course, Fallout 1&2, Baldur´s Gate 1&2, System Shock 2, Deus Ex and Gothic I&II.

Knights of the Old Republic is my favorite western-style RPG. Good enough for me to play it enough to see all the various content branches for both Light/Dark Side and the romance subplots. Mass Effect's threatening to take over there, but I'm only on my second playthrough for that so far.

JRPG- It'd either have to be Final Fantasy Tactics or the various portable editions of Pokemon- FFT I've played through at least eight times (Three normal playthroughs, one low-level attempt, four SSC-style games) and I've owned and enjoyed a copy of each of the GB/GBA/DS Pokemons- even if I haven't 'gotten them all' since Gold/Silver, they're still worth a play and fun to break out for the occasional battle)

Legend of Kartia for the PS1. 3/4 dialog 1/4 gameplay! In no other game the 'bad guys' got so much screentime (half of the time or something, making then round, less bad). As for gameplay... no leveling!!! something a lot of RPGs should do. I love RPGs but I hate hate hate leveling. so boring.

Mass Effect by far - and that's in direct competition with Deus Ex, Morrowind AND KotOR!

1. Final Fantasy VII
2. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
3. Shenmue
4. Super Mario RPG
5. Deus Ex

I haven't played the BioWare RPGs enough yet, nor have I even tried Dragon Warrior VIII.

By the way, Diablo II and FFX were both hugely disappointing IMO.
