So, this topic is pretty self explanatory. Anyway, what is the best single-player game you have ever played ever. I'm pretty sure mine would be Fallout 3, as I have about 85 hours on my play-through and still have not been to every location, gotten every unique weapon, every bobble-head so technically (from a rabid completionist's standpoint) I have not truly beaten it. Leave your personal choice along with the reason why.
What about New Vegas? I liked Fallout 3, but I liked New Vegas even more.

My personal favorite SP game is still Planescape: Torment.
I prefer Fallout 3 over New Vegas for only one reason. I felt far more attached to the Capital Wasteland and its inhabitants then I did the Mohave Wasteland and its citizens. Towards the end of Fallout 3 I was fighting to give the people clean water. Towards the end of New Vegas, I still didn't give a shit about anybody in the Mohave.

But I will concede that New Vegas did balance itself better and you didn't feel like a walking tank / incarnation of god by the end. That added a layer of excitement to the game.

For me, the best singleplayer games are Fallout 3 and Red Dead Redemption.
I loved F3's environment and back story, and the DLCs were great. By the time I finished every quest, gotten every good weapon and bobble-head, attained max level, killed every supermutant behemoth and accumulated enough caps that the economy was fucked, my main file had over 100 hours on it.
In the end though, RDR is my absolute fucking favourite game of all time. No other game has evoked more emotion in me than that one did. I love the combat, the characters, the story and the setting. The only only thing I didn't like was Tall Trees, and that trouble could easily be avoided by stealing a stage coach.

Got to be an open world one - for me a least.

I'm going to say Oblivion, although I'd probably mention Red Dead second.

Hopefully Skyrim comes and blows them both out of the water. :p

In terms of how magical my experience was: Bioshock (Yes, I even loved the cheesy ending, SHUT IT)
Replay value: Silent Hill 2 (Always find something new because of that damn fog)

Of course, this is all personal opinion.
i'll agree with you for the bioshock experience. i love that game, so damn much.

fallout 3 is another huge time sinker for me, and i enjoyed it throughout, so that would be another top one for me.

I don't know, I've always been a huge Fallout fan, but to me New Vegas was a disgrace. Nearly everything it had in it's favor could be gotten and improved on with mods for the PC version of Fallout 3, also with less glitches.
But if you really were a "huge" Fallout fan, you wouldn't have liked 3.

The whole, lack of any humour whatsoever and attempt to be an uber-srs-faec game really pulled a shit one.

OT: I'd have to go with... Deus Ex, Mass Effect or Diablo.

Three masterpieces.

For me? Same as you, OP. Fallout 3. I've played that game for countless hours in the past, bought all the DLC and got all 1550G for it. It was the best game I ever got. Too bad Fallout: New Vegas doesn't live up to it in my opinion...

Baldur's Gate (1-2) is pretty epic. What did you think of the expansion, Throne of Baal?

BTW, if you like Baldur's Gate 2, what's your opinion on Icewind Dale (1-2) and Planescape: Torment?
I haven't actually played Icewind Dale or Planescape: Torment. I didn't even know they existed, as I was barely a gamer at the time, and ever since I did find out about them, I haven't had the time and/or motivation to play them.

As for Throne of Baal, it was alright. I definitely preferred the original, but ToB wasn't bad. The only thing I really remember standing out about it, though, is that Sarevok came back as a party member. That was kinda cool. Everything else was resoundingly meh.

Say it with me: Deus Ex

It's as good as they say, especially if you go in having no idea what to expect, as I did. It's the only game I've ever played where I felt like I every shot I fired actually made a difference, and not a pre-programmed bs "Karma meter" difference, but an impact on the world I was working my way through. And it's also the only game I've ever played where every playstyle (stealth, diplomacy, guns blazing, subterfuge) is not only a legitimate strategy, but is just as valid as all of the others in every situation.

Other contenders are GTA: San Andreas for sure, it's got a great story, amazing characters, a world you can really get lost in, but it doesn't take itself remotely seriously. It was actually the first game to feature dildos as a weapon, mind you. It's probably the best GTA game we'll ever get.

As many others have said, MGS3: Snake Eater is fantastic. It's like living through a particularly corny James Bond movie and then having everything go horribly wrong. You've really got to have a tolerance for the Metal Gear style though to appreciate the story, but if you can, it's a doozy. It's hilarious, epic, and even capable of making you shed manly tears if you let yourself go along for the ride. But if you can't get past how over the top and ridiculously on the nose the writing is, you'll probably just roll your eyes a lot and try to skip the 4 or so hours of cutscenes. That's to say nothing of the gameplay, which is the best parts of all the Metal Gear games distilled into an amazing experience that never plays the same way twice (and you will play through it more than once). Not to mention that this game has some of the best bosses of all time, hands down. Familiarity with the other MGS titles is not strictly necessary, but will only enhance your experience.

Also Minecraft.

Skies of Arcadia, unforgettable characters, airship battles, and really flashy super moves in normal battles, you can smack your enemies with a moon!
This. Forever this.

I remember getting it as I was desperate for any Dreamcast game at that point and what I got was my favourite game ever.

I would sell my left nut and smash the other for a sequel.
The port/upgrade version on Gamecube is pretty good too. There's a few little extras, plus all of the Dreamcast DLC stuff.
I've been hunting in England for it for ages, but it's really hard to find and I don't want to spend the insane prices they are asking on eBay for it.

Fallout 2, I still play it religiously to this very day. You can play the game a hundred times and have a different playstyle every time, you can beat the entire game without having to kill anyone because or persuasion, or you can blast your way through every town until you find a place to rest your head. Good times, good times.

Super Metroid and Earthbound are tied for second. SM had exploration and felt very big but not overwhelming and it always felt awesome and you had a sense of accomplishment when you found something new. Earthbound has some of the best humor out of any RPG I've ever played.

I always liked Halo, Portal and for some reason King Kong on the PS2.. It could be glitchy at times but I always thought it was fun to play.. and I guess thats what your meant to look for in games..
King Kong was possibly the best movie-licensed game I've ever played and is completely awesome. Also, somewhat terrifying.

It did lose a bit of punch when it started giving you hundreds of rifle rounds and wide open spaces to use them in, but it had enough impact from the start that it didn't matter too much.

(For those who don't know, King Kong was a survival-horror/action horror FPS set on Skull Island)

The game that whenever you mention it, someone goes and reinstalls it.

Deus Ex.
I'm actually considering uninstalling that. *braces for flaming*

I understand it was probably revolutionary at the time, but the graphics and voice acting have really dated badly, the inventory system seems clunky and due to the layout of my laptop's keyboard it's really hard to press all the buttons I need to, even with remapped controls.

It probably makes up for this later on, but it's really hard to overcome in short term.

I suppose I'd pick Infamous, Half-Life, Doom and possibly COD 4

You will probably enjoy Icewind Dale and Torment also. Icewind Dale is being called the Diablo of AD&D. It's more focused on fighting. I like the whole dungeon crawler idea. You set out with your party to a location containing a gigantic dungeon in which a story unravels and an epic boss awaits at the end. I can't recall how many dungeons there were, but it takes a while to play through them all, especially on hardcore mode.

Planescape: Torment focuses even more (than Baldur's Gate) on story and characters. It's a bit more linear during the middle segment of the game. But overall the game is awesome. It has some of the best and wackiest game characters I have seen in a game.

My order of preference would be: Torment > Baldur's Gate > Icewind Dale

Also check out this optimization (high res mod) guide if you are gonna try any of the above games: http://thunderpeel2001.blogspot.com/2009/01/planescape-torment-fully-modded.html [http://thunderpeel2001.blogspot.com/2009/01/planescape-torment-fully-modded.html]

Huh, alright. I'll have to see if I can find them on GOG, sounds like my kind of games. Thanks for the mod too.

Personally I would add Liara and Tali to that list, but that would get me all the Tali lovers after my blood.... and there are quite a lot of them....

Recettear .... challenge anybody to play that game and not get hooked. I have invented time travel so I could go back in time and play more of it whilst my other self has to do things like eat and sleep.

I really like the Shining Force I and II.
Maybe it's the nostalgia glasses speaking, but I still think the story and combat system is really good, even by today's standards.
