I'd have to say that my top single-player game would have to be Chrono Trigger; it's very well written, does time travel extremely well, and it's interesting enough to make me want to keep going back to play it over and over again.
This.

Chrono Trigger is a game I still frequently cite as the greatest game ever made.
Seconded here. CT is a game that still resonates within the core of my being. Probably one of life's greatest lessons ever told was by Belthasar during that sad, sad moment in the game:

"The strength you wield now cannot free me. No, perhaps it's better said that no strength can. So long as you lean upon the crutch of power, this world's sorrow can know no true end."

It's one of the few RPGs that made me feel as if I changed, personally, the more I played it. The same can be said of Wild ARMs 1, in a way. It's somewhat odd, and perhaps a bit morbid, but when my life eventually ends, I'd like my tombstone to say, "This person now sleeps beyond the flow of time."

Way of the samurai 3.

Say what you want, it's pretty much nailed the whole "Consequences" thing western developer been doing for a good 10 years now.

That and you can be a total badass and NOT kill anyone. When was the last game you played in which you could simply let people go?

So, this topic is pretty self explanatory. Anyway, what is the best single-player game you have ever played ever. I'm pretty sure mine would be Fallout 3, as I have about 85 hours on my play-through and still have not been to every location, gotten every unique weapon, every bobble-head so technically (from a rabid completionist's standpoint) I have not truly beaten it. Leave your personal choice along with the reason why.

BG2 is the single best game ever made, bar none. Everything about it, from the story to the gameplay is just this side of perfect, and it has the greatest villain of all time, Jon Irenicus [http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Jon_Irenicus]. Really, there are no flaws in this game. It's easily the best.

-points to avatar- Tales of Symphonia is one of my favorite games of all time, if not my all-time favorite. I enjoyed it going through single-player, and have replayed it multiple times. It may not be perfect, but I adore it.

Of course, there are several other single-player games that I like (I play single-player games much, much more often than multiplayer, and judge games based on their single player mode alone), but I can't think of any I prefer over Tales of Symphonia. At least off the top of my head.
Did you try Tales of Vesperia? I've never played a Tales game before, because I didn't have a console for which the games were released. Then Tales of Vesperia came along on the Xbox360 (and eventually PS3). It's a pretty awesome game. Though it's old school and doesn't try anything new, it did do everything right.
Yep, I have- that's what got me into the Tales series, actually. Vesperia's a great game. I prefer Symphonia, but Vesperia definitely has a few strengths Symphonia doesn't (like the ability to free run in battle, for one). Of the Tales series, I've played Vesperia, Abyss, Symphonia, and Phantasia, heh.

Always good to see someone who's played Vesperia, though. That game was fun.

In terms of how magical my experience was: Bioshock (Yes, I even loved the cheesy ending, SHUT IT)
Replay value: Silent Hill 2 (Always find something new because of that damn fog)

Of course, this is all personal opinion.
sILENT HILL 1 and 2, Syphon Filter ruled when I was little till Metal Gear Solid blew it out of the water. Recently I agree with Fallout 3, New Vegas wasn't quit as good because of the lack of.. well evreything.. Tho I did appreciate the tweaks to formula, just hated the initial bugs when it was released. Lol to Docs spinning demon head.

Tetris.

Honeslty, there aren't many games that have remained so universally popular for as long as it has without any modifications to how the game is played and what the goal is. It's simple and effective and even though it's had minor graphical updates over the years it's still the exact same game that it always has been. The reasons behind this are simple: it's impossible to improve. Change anything about the game (apart from the visuals) and suddenly it's not Tetris any more, the game was perfect from the very beginning and it's continued to remain that way ever since. There have been imitators, pretenders to its legacy, but none have ever come close.

Also, you'll be hard-pressed to find someone who hasn't heard of it before.

So, as a cultural icon, as a massive part of gaming history (seriously, you could make a movie about the effort Atari had to go through to secure the rights), from its staying power, its addictiveness, its endless replay value and it's elegant design I think that Tetris is definitely the greatest single player game of all time.

I really, really, REALLY, liked The Darkness. Something about sitting down and just watching a movie with the protagonists girlfriend held something magical for me.

In my opinion, that would be Final fantasy X, because of the following reasons:
1)Great characters, both secondary and primary. This game has shown me the best female character of the industry: Yuna. Not only she has great inner characteristic (strong without being *****, sensitive without being weakling, etc...), but she also has great looks and decent clothing. Basically, she is my favorite Female character in videogames. Plus, Auron is absolute BADASS;
2)Astonishing music, which, after 9 years, still warms my heart and never leaves my MP3 player;
3) Graphics, which even after 10 years of existence still look more attractive then major part of modern games;
4)Great gameplay;
5) Level-up system, which is simple, but has a certain depth;
6)Story, which I expirienced six times, and I would like to expirience for the seventh time.

In short, for me, THIS game is greatest game so far.

Portal or Mirror's Edge.

Neither are really based around killing (though some does take place (sort of, in Portal, anyway)), they are in first person (an absolute MUST for me), are different from anything else out there, don't out-stay their welcome and give a real sense of freedom and wonder (even though you are basically trapped in Portal.
