The darkest game I ever played was Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. The only game in which the character who you play as can go insane and kill himself. I once made him do it when he wasn't holding a weapon and hound it more disturbing than when I had him do it with a shotgun. You've got to put in a LOT of effort to strangle yourself to death. Even when you do manage to beat the game, the ending is pretty depressing ... but then it IS a Lovecraft game >.>
Another game ive not heard of but am definatly curious by.

A game im not sure wether to class as dark is 'Shadow of the Colossus' the game was strange and confusing but had a weird darkness to it with the spirits and the ending. Very enjoyable too

Also Ive just found out theres an alice 2 in progress at the moment. Very interested to see what happens with that

L4D without the flash-light on. *cue groans*

OT: If by dark, you mean sorta evil and twisted, the Carlos incident in Saints Row 2 along with the funeral scene.

Portal has rather dark humour. I'm agreeing with Sasquatch on the "Carlos Incident". Fallout and Oblivion can have dark themes too.

planescape torment, or tribly series.
Planescape tourment was awsome but I didnt find it dark. It was on the same sort of par as Arcanum (Best game ever). Trilby series was awsome though. So glad Yatzee made those and got the job here.
i found it dark in the whole atmosphere, and the ideas of the game itself, cannot die loosing memorys everytime you die, going insaine some of these times (not playable but found out about), the places themself were depressing and dark, not in the gory kind of way but in the depressing kind, waking up in a morgue
going to hell, or the blood war
i could go on, but the storyline might end up getting ruined for you all and well, i cant really be bothered right now.
ive never heard of arcanum, might look it up.

Fallout. The cheeriness of the 60's aesthetic that came before only serves to highlight how soul crushingly futile it all is.
This. And isn't it 50's aesthetic?

The Darkness was extremely downbeat and depressing at points.

It was almost too nihilistic and sad to play for long bouts.
Agreed, it has one of the most intense moments in any game ever. I really liked that game.

OT: Condemned
The Suffering
Manhunt
Holy crap, I was going to say these same exact things, but I saw this post. Darn it, I need to get to these threads quicker!

I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream.

The title alone comes off as dark. Point and click adventure where humanity is extinct and the only 5 survivors are kept alive by a super computer for its sick amusement. Deals with insanity, selfishness, rape, racism, paranoia, and genocide (am I winning?). More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Have_No_Mouth,_and_I_Must_Scream_%28video_game%29

The first STALKER was a real downer to because it was a lot more believable than Fallout (despite some paranormal elements).

Those were both definitely dark, although I'd put fallout 3 in there, more because it was so soul crushingly bad that the though of having to play any more made me feel depressed.

I did once try to play that game but could never get a properly working version. Wasnt it origionally a book or something though? I read the synopsis of the story a while back when I was looking for games like that (Shortly after the first trilby game was released)
