When I was 4 I think.

And apparently most non-gaming adults can't cope with walking around in a first-person perspective, so I don't know how you expect him to.

i think that there shouldnt be a minimum age. games can be very egucational etc but at younger ages the time spent should be restricted and balanced with outside play like sports or what ever.

i cant remeber a time in my life i wasnt playing some game. so i guess i started when i was like 4-5. i remember waking up at like 5 or 6 in the morning and going outside and playing warcraft on the road before school. so i guess that was when i was like 6-7.

Portal is a physics-based puzzle game. Not exactly the kind of game you want to teach to a 3-year old, who probably hasn't even grasped the concept of conservation yet.

By all means, let the child play some games. But you have to find the right games. Find something simple.

Also, their idea of fun might not be the same as a grown-up's. Even if they're not playing the game right, they might still have some fun with the computer. As long as they don't electrocute themselves.

I know I played from about 10 or so. I also distinctly remember playing Mafia with my Dad when it first came out. Good memories.

He doesn't even know how to turn on the damn thing, let alone how to set it up.

I think he is far too young to have a Xbox, but that's just me.
If you can't use it you're too young for it. Rule of life.

I agree with you. A seven year old with an Xbox 360 isn't rare was far as I can tell judging the fact that's all I can hear from microphones. It's good to be a PC gamer.

When I was about 2 or 3 I used to play the most basic PC game. It was on a beast of a floppy disk and involved getting a bear some birthday cake. And pushing a button.

I guess I 'properly' started gaming at age 4 or 5 when my parents bought me a gameboy colour for my birthday along with Pokemon Red and Blue. Or at least, I think that's when I started.

Consolewise was a few years later when the Gamecube came out which remains to date the only console I've got that I didn't wait a year for the price to drop on. Admittedly this was a joint Christmas gift for my sisters and I but y'know...

When it comes to my platform of choice, I didn't start proper PC gaming for quite a while. Probably not til around 2004, and even that was relatively basic stuff, no Shooters or anything. In fact, around then I think all I played was Strategy. But as I led up to that I'd sit and watch my dad playing all sorts, mostly FPS, and I'd be his wingman, pointing out enemies he'd miss, memorising where there were hidden health kits and other such irritating back-seat driving playing techniques. I still sometimes watch, just 'cause it's one of the nicest ways we spend time together.

Wait, that makes it sound like we hate each other or something XD It's not like that, we just get a lot of talking done when we have that set-up.

EDIT: Totally forgot that minimum age thing... I'd say there shouldn't be one. Perhaps for online multiplayer, or at least the mics on that, but otherwise things shouldn't be restricted.

i started with a Terminator console running some Mario rip-off at 4, then Warcraft 1 and Rogue Squadron on win 95 at ~5 years old...good times. gradually I learned how to install small programs, progressed to Age of empires I & II on win 98 and so on... my dad was of great help in making me understand the basics of computer usage

I started out aged about 7 on stuff like paint and Flight Simulator 2000... Hardcore roots, huh?

It then progressed to playing Cossacks on my friends' computer at something like 5 frames per second.

It went from there to Red Alert 2, the Counter Strike and Battlefield 2 all the way to ArmA and the fantastic Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis.

And then WoW... I'm ashamed of myself.

I would say console gaming would be easier for a kid, because you know, less buttons than there is keys.

I started gaming on the PS1 around 7 years old, playing stuff like Gran Turismo and Tomb Raider.
The first game I was actually good at was MGS2, and believe me, I kicked its virtual ass.
As far as age restrictions go, start gaming any age, as long as the games you play aren't too graphic. If they want to scream and shoot anything that moves and have a tantrum/sulk every time they die, go ahed as long as it's in the privacy of your home. As far as multiplayer goes, not until you're at least 14-15.

Well the first game I ever remember playing was a really old terminator game on the old block of gray that was once called a Gameboy. I believe I was around 2-3 years old then. I knew I didn't know how to play it but all the same I was fascinated by the game even though I could only get through the first 10 seconds of the game before I died and had to restart.

The next game I remember playing was Mischief Makers for the N64 and really got me to think more about what I was doing in the game.

I suggest a minimum age of gaming should be when a person is prepared to understand how to play a game simply.

Also help with your Nephew? Get him pokemon on a GB or a console with a controller. He'll eventually calm down when he realises there is something else to this gaming business.

when the kid knows what and where all the buttons are on the controller.

PC eh, when the kid knows how to use the internet.
