Because having a lv100 magicarp is fuckin awesome
And the only thing more awesome than that is having the ultimate badass team - 6 level 100 Magikarps. Bitches shake in their boots at the mere mention of you name when you attain such a level of badassery.

There are some pokemon that actually get good moves but don't get them anymore after they evolve. Most of them are crap though, I don't know anyone who would pass up a Nidoking with Megahorn for a Nidorino with Horn Drill. There's also cases like Trapinch if you are willing to sacrifice the speed bonus from Vibrava so you can have higher attack(because some stats are actually lowered for vibrava).

And some pokemon are just so fucking ugly, but this is purely aesthetic of course.
OT: Pretty much this. For example, I kept my Cubone from evolving so it could learn Double Edge before level 50, since I was having a lvl 50 only battle against my gf.

nidoran male gets poison jab at level X, while nidorino gets it at lvl Y. at level Y, nidoking gets a different move (earth power i believe it's called) that's also strong. but you can only learn a move BEFORE your poke evolves; so if you let him evolve naturally and grow to lvl Y, you wouldn't have both. if you interrupt nidoran from evolving, you can get both.

so yeah, you're not denying him better moves. lowerlevel pokemon actually get highpower moves earlier on -> the tradeoff is a weak poke (statwise) with strong moves.
Silly, Nidorino learns Poison Jab at lvl43, and Nidoking learns Earth Power at 43. Thus, you get your Nidorino to level 43 so it learns Poison Jab and then evolve it straight away so it learns Earth Power too. Though one move being physical and one being special it would make for a poorly rounded Nidoking since theres no such thing as a special AND physical Nidoking (at least not in tournys).

No one has mentioned that a Pokemon requires less experience to level up in its unevolved form. So a level 50 charmander will require less experience to hit 51 than a level 50 charizard would.
That isn't exactly true. Pokemon in the same evolution tree will require the same amount of experience to level up, e.g., a level 18 Bulbasaur might only need 800 EXP to level up, and an Ivysaur at the same level and with the same amount of gained experience as the Bulbasaur will also only ned 800 EXP to level.

The only reason to cancel evolutions is the movesets--when the moves are learned and what moves are learned. Examples:
-Kirlia learns Psychic at level 36. Gardevoir learns Psychic at level 40. (B/W)
-Trapinch learns Fissure around the Lv. 80 mark. Vibrava and Flygon don't.
-Smoochum learns Psychic at level 38; Jynx never does. Jynk learns Lovely Kiss at level 8, 22 levels before Smoochum evolves (and Smoochum can't learn Lovely Kiss). There movesets are also different enough to make a difference: Smoochum is the only way for Jynx to get good special Psychic attacks naturally, and Jynx learns many more physical attacks than Smoochum does.

EDIT: Also, Pokemon that evolve with a stone usually learn all their moves before evolution (e.g., Victreebel, Arcanine, Starmie learn less two moves after evolution). The only exception I can think of right now are the Eeveelutions (Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon), for reasons that should be obvious.

There are some Pokemon who can only learn certain powerful moves if they stay in their current state. Some people want to be able to earn that move before evolving them with a stone. Other times, its a matter of atheistic.

If you keep your pokemon at bay from evolving it learns moves quicker than it would if it evolves

And for personal reasons some people don't like the evolutions of said pokemon so they keep them at their lower based levels cause they look nicer.

These pokemon are yours. You trained them so why not have the option to cancel evolution?
You make the rules when it comes to this.

To simulate the pride of Pokemon that don't want to evolve. It happens in the show sometimes.

Silly, if you do that nidoking doesn't learn earth power. nidoking learns earth power when he levels from 42 to 43, not when he evolves at 43.
He will learn it either way, I have done it only recently. If you dont believe me then try it yourself, because I know from experience that it does indeed work that way. The conditions to naturally learn a move are only that your Pokemon is in the correct stage at the correct level, there is no check to see what stage it was at the previous level.
