What is the word for namedropping of your own site or youtube channel or whatever on a popular forum such as this one?

And why do people hate that so much?

Surely its necessary advertising, no movie or production of any kind can gain notoriety without publicity and advertising. I can understand if all you say is "Hey! go to my channel!" or whatever and nothing else over and over, but surely throwing in a mention of it at an appropriate time isn't so bad, is it?

What do you think?

If you are talking specifically about the Escapist, we have places in your profile to put the link for your home page.

If you are talking about the wider internet community, I think you may have answered your own question. It very much depends on the context of the mention.

Ah, didn't spot that section XD, sorry!

As for the wider internet community (and here as well actually). What would you say is an acceptable mention? I don't want to land myself in trouble by dropping it into relevant conversation. Of course I'm not gonna go making a new thread devoted to advertising it, but is a healthy mention ok when the topic is such that it would fit in with the conversation?

I suppose what I'm trying to find out is, why are people so against advertising when it is, in a sense, necessary?

(Don't worry, if you say it's not ok, I'm not gonna do it lol)

Never, ever spam. Plugging is alright if the situation calls for it, such as when you're asked to (however likely the situation)...

At least in Stompy's books...

I'll admit that it's a fine line. We don't want to stifle people's creativity but at the same time we don't want people treating the site as their own personal advertising space.

I can't give you any absolutes except this; prefacing nearly every post with a link to your blog is going to land you in hot water.

That's why I really consider it when I toot others or my horn to get other's attention.
I fear the banhammer; Bulldogs scare me and those [Japanese?] Characters look menacing.

Well, It's probably best to avoid the banhammer here and just say, the adress for the channel in question is now on my profile here, you may like it, you may not, it's cosplay and anime humour and its pretty obscure to say the least but look if you want to, and I'll say no more about it unless it's appropriate.

Sorry for causing a commotion. As you can tell, I'm just desperate to get the word out as it's going down in flames haha

Feel free to lock or remove this thread as you see fit. Just please understand my position and spare me your wrath lol

ha ha maybe I need to consider the possibilty that we just aren't very good comedians, or dressers :p

Off the wall humour and obscure references seem to be very hit or miss.

Since it seems I'm not gonna be cast into hell for it, maybe some people, if they're interested, could take a look (the link is in my profile) and give some feedback. I warn you though, it's quite dry humour and weird as hell haha. You need to look at it with an open mind XD

Be not afraid. I'll probably get banned for revealing the big secret, but those characters (assuming you take them as a single word and not as a name, which can make things complicated) mean "Japanese grosbeak", Eophona personato. A finch native to East Asia. Not so menacing now... except for that big banhammer... :-(

Is it shameless plugging if you say "Hey everyone, go to my profile"?

haha I wouldn't know, seems kinda risky, I'll have to wait for someone to openly ASK me about the thing I'm hoping to promote, and do so outside this thread to remain safe XD.

It's too much of a risk since I want to remain a part of this forum for far more things than that.
