What is with the hate on sequels?

People like to complain there are a LOT of sequels that are better then the originals, like Gears of War 2, Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn, Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkiichi 3, Super Smash bros Melee, 1080 Avalanche, Tony Hawk's Underground 2, Kingdom Hearts 2, Oblivion, Super Paper Mario, Super Monkey Ball 2!

Fable 2/3 still hasn't improved on the first one, neither has Assassins Creed 2, neither has Bioshock 2, neither has Mass Effect 2, neither has operation flashpoint 2, neither has modern warfare 2, neither has Splinter Cell, neither has Halo, neither has gta 4 Believe me when I say that this can go on and on, their story just falls apart and gameplay is never as good, mainly because after success they will try to sell more and how do you do this.. right make it so that every fool can play.

Because, USUALLY sequels are just a way to cash in and make money without improving on anything in particular whether we're talking movies or games.

If you get right down to the nitty gritty specifics of games, most aren't that good, they just pass mediocre, and sequels often shoot either at about the same level as their predecessors or lower (in the case of some movies, which isn't even made by the same people and is just an attempt to get some money off its popularity).

It's difficult to get a sequel right. You have to make enough changes to keep players interested, but not so many changes that it alienates old players because it's an entirely different game.

This COULD mean that the developer spends all of it's time with the multiplayer they think is good and a little time on a single player they don't care about. If the multiplayer is decent, fine by me. If it isn't, stop trying.

It COULD, but as I said in this case it didn't, so, why do you hate this game again?

It just left a bad taste in my mouth. BioShock was my favorite 360 game (when it was an exclusive) and when I hear about a sequel I wasn't excited but I thought this could be something I would very much enjoy. As you can tell I didn't.

It had multiplayer, BETRAYAL!

The multiplayer was bad so it sucks.

I did actually play it, but I'm gonna blindly hate it because I liked the origional.

Just to clear something up, the developers working on the Single Player were not working on the multiplayer. 2K Marin worked on the Single Player, and did a fine job, I must say. Digital Extremes, the makers of the original Unreal Tournament, did the multiplayer.

Huh, that's quite interestng, I didn't actually know that, thinking back on it, it did feel a lot like Unreal Tourney, I'm kinda suprised I diodn't realise that before.

Am I raging? No, I'm just stating that I am not a BioShock 2 fan.

Are my reasons incredibly stupid? Depends on who you ask. It's a matter of opinion.

Am I bashing 2 without playing it? No.

Blindly hating? No. I liked the first one better. Just because "problems" were "fixed" doesn't mean I will like it more. I like the idea of a man who has no idea what he's getting into exploring a world where there is a surprise around every single corner. (Sort of off topic but I honestly think 2 should have skipped altogether and Infinite came out.. Whether the thought of that game was even in anyones mind is unknown, but it would have been nice to see a new creative world in each game.)

Am I a fanboy? BioShock isn't the only game. There are games clearly better than BioShock but I just happen to like the game a great deal.

It would be different if I said "I hate BioShock 2 because the cover art looks stupid and the 10 minutes of gameplay I've seen looks ridiculous."

Basically the problem is this: there are some people who think that they're being somehow "edgy" or "different" or "non-conformist" or whatever by hating sequels, remakes, reality TV, Justin Beiber and whatever else is chic to hate today. Forget for a moment the irony of supposed non-conformists all acting and thinking in lockstep (but don't forget it for too long, cause it's hilarious to watch) but consider this for a moment.

There's nothing inherently wrong with sequels, remakes, or reality TV (Justin Beiber is, however, the devil), but the odds of one of those being a naked, uncreative cash-grab go up dramatically.

As for Justin Beiber, I find it curious that the local pop station constantly talks about him, reveling in the latest gossip and his success... but doesn't actually play his music. The odds are that he'll end up like so many teen sensations before him, his music mostly forgotten save by the cadre of middle-aged women who thought he was dreamy when they were twelve.
