When I liven in a small space it was a Dachshund, they are perfect for urban dwellers or people with no yard. They are energetic and they love you... like most dogs love you but holy damn you can be home sick all day on the weekend get more cough drops and be gone for only like 3 minutes the thing still greats you like you took 3 weeks vacation, they are infectiously happy dogs. My current dog I love is an Irish windhound, less energetic (which is not saying a lot as they are still a ball of energy) but they still just love everything, want to go for a walk? they love it! Want to lay in bed? They love it! Want to cook them in the oven? I will kill you.

Runner ups. Fox. Cuz... it is not a bread of dog, still it act like it is half dog and half cat (yes i had one as a pet, I gave it food it went into my dog door and... i just kind of de facto owned him)and Wolf, I had a friend that found a Wolf and saved the darn thing, how awesome is it to own or even just pet a Wolf? VERY FUCKING AWESOME! again... not actually a bread.

I have had 3 cats. Loved all of them, the vet said "Mixed" as a bread for all of them.

I don't go for purebreds. All that inbreeding is creepy, and there are lots of shelter animals that need homes.
I prefer to own mixed breeds as well but it doesn't mean you can't have a favourite breed.

OT: My favourite dog breed would probably be a Border Collie. They're insanely intelligent and my first dog was a Border Collie mix so there's a bit of sentimentality mixed in there too.

As for cats, I'm just going to say plain ol' Tabby cats.

It has to be the Tortoiseshell cat, it is the original cat of many colours. Or as my friend put it, a selfish cat that can't decide what colour it wants to be.

I mean how much cute do you want?

As for dogs, I will always go for the good old mongrels.
