I haven't played many racing games this generation. The only ones I can recall playing are Forza Motorsport 2, Mario Kart Wii, Burnout Paradise, and Sega and Sonic All-Stars Racing. I didn't spend that much time on these ones either.

I think the platform that hosted many of my favorites and when I was most into racing games was on the N64. Games such as:
Mario Kart 64
Diddy Kong Racing
Wave Race
San Fransisco Rush
Beetle Adventure Racing
1080 Snowboarding

I spent countless hours on these games.

Mario Kart 64 probably takes the cake. I even bought the soundtrack to play in my car. Luckily it didn't inspire me to throw banana peels out the window and launch turtle shells at other cars.
I spent hours upon hours shaving off split seconds in time trial mode. I memorized every track and even the little glitches where you can get over walls and such to shave off seconds.

First is Mario Kart DS, that's the version that I played the most and loved the most.

In close second is Burnout: Paradise. The one thing keeping it from first is that you can't restart a damn race, so if you lose you have to go right back to the start of the race.

Crash Team Racing for the PSX was fantastic. NFSUG2 and Most Wanted are great as well. Most Wanted would have been perfect if it kept all the customization from UG2.

Still playing F1 2011 and still have a lot of love for Gran Turismo 5. The WRC series are far better rally games than Dirt for the purist, and I even have NASCAR in my collection (unusually for a European). So yeah, I like my racing to be rooted firmly in the real world.

I never could come to love "kart" stylee games or arcade racers. They're fun, and I do play Need For Speed and Burnout in short bursts from time to time. They just never hold my attention the way a game with a more "sim" feel to it can. I think that puts me firmly in the minority of a minority on The Escapist...

Forza 3. I sunk a lot of hours into that game and Forza's way better than Gran Turismo IMO.

The Mario Kart games are always fun, my favourite's probably Double Dash on the Gamecube.

Mario Kart Double Dash. All of the crazy tracks and fun items of the other games, but with the added strategy of having two characters per kart. Also, Dino Dino Jungle is an awesome track.

There seems to be an unusually high number of people talking about racing games on these forums recently. Good!

I've spent literally thousands of hours playing the Forza franchise. I love it so much. I've never come across a racing game which just feels so good to drive in. The handling model is exquisite. I can't say which one I like the best. I can't really pick a single one that I've preferred or thought was better. To me it's just one huge evolving experience over time since I play them pretty much constantly. It's not like I play the game for a few months and then start over when the new one comes out, it's like the next game in the series is a whole new build of the same game. Like a 2.0 (or 3 or 4.0) version of the game.

I used to like the NFS series, but they went downhill. Underground 2 is one of my favourite games of all time but after Carbon they pretty much all turned to shit. It's been painful to see how far this franchise has fallen. It wasn't just suddenly crap one day, it was a gradual decline. If seeing the change between Fable 1 and 2 was like seeing a friend falling off a cliff, watching NFS was like seeing them die of cancer.

I also love the Burnout series. I loved it right from the first one, which I had on Gamecube. Because of that I never got Burnout 3. I was waiting for it to come to GC but it never did, so I just skipped that one and got Revenge on PS2 once I got one. I've also spent a load of time on Paradise. That game is great, despite what some people say about it. It sucks we haven't got a real new Burnout game since then, though. And now Criterion are focusing on NFS, so it doesn't seem likely we'll get one in a while. At least they might be able to bring NFS back from the grave, although I was not enthused by their previous attempt to do so. MW looks better despite its stupid name.

I really love the TDU games as well. I had more fun with the first, but I can't deny that the second is technically better in many ways. But no other racing game is quite like either of those. They are just so massive. There's no better road trip/Gumball simulator than those games, and playing it with friends is a blast.

I love Race Driver GRID too. I've always had a soft spot for Codemasters, but the DiRT games never really got me interested. I'm sure they're great, and I've considered buying them on many occasions, but I just simply prefer tarmac racing over dirt racing. I loved GRID's realistic tracks and cars mixed with the really intense driving feel. The myriad of different event types was another great thing about the game, and the presentation of everything was top notch, just like pretty much all the other recent Codemasters racing games. I can't wait for the sequel.

Flatout: Ultimate Carnage is another great one. I like this one because it's a real sleeper hit. It's a really fun demo derby type game with lots of cool special event types that usually involve throwing your driver out of your car using him to score points in varying games, like bowling, baseball, basketball, etc. The races themselves are genuinely fun too. They're chaotic, but they do take skill. The cars feel appropriately wobbly, but not annoyingly so. They're still predictable, most of the time. I advise people to check it out. Ironically, the best way to make money on the game, though, is to lose the race on purpose. Going backwards and just wrecking people as hard as you can often gets you more cash because of bonus score than you get for actually winning the race. The game also has a really great soundtrack. Lots of little known but really good rock bands that fit the tone of the game perfectly.

Arcade racer fan here. Sims just bore me, though half way in-between like dirt/ grid is ok.

wipeout and extreme G are awesome. I wish they did more lightning fast racers like those ^_^

Wipeout pulse for the psp is probs my favourite of the lot. I'll get round to fury once i eventually get a ps3.

A MOMENT of silence for the recent closing down of psygnosis/ studio liverpool, most famous for wipeout, rollcage and destruction derby as well. They have recently been shut down by sony, damn them ;_;

I would have to say Midnight Club 3 Dub edition remix and need for speed carbon, both where really solid and had their own appeal but i did think Midnight Club 3 Dub edition remix had a better drift system then the need for speed games

The racing game I loved the most and yet hated the most was the only one I bought in recent years; Need for Speed: Shift.

Especially with the cockpit view enabled and a headset on it felt so freakin' intense. Might fire it up again though on Easy this time. Don't want to break another controller.

Burnout. Mostly Burnout 3 - Takedown and Burnout Paradise.
Mainly because I'm usually crap at racing games, so bring rewarded for crashing helps.

Burnout Revenge. Especially the 360 version. It was and still is more fast and more furious (pun fully intended) than any other racing game I've ever played. The crashing is fun, the racing and trying not to crash is fun...and hard.

Runner up? I don't know. Need for Speed 3 on PS1?

Burnout 3 Takedown Because nothing screams manly like a combat racing game in which you use nothing but your car as the weapon.

Gran Turismo 5. i just can't get enough of it. i play it pretty much everyday since release. Not much just few timed laps on random track and couple practice laps on THE Ring so i don't get rusty. Recently released Twin Ring Motegi DLC sucked me in for 4 hours.

Mario Kart 64 was a blast to play, and some of the tracks were pretty fun.

BUT! Cruinin' USA was fun as hell, and I still remember trying to get through Chicago in first place and it was hard as hell to do. Some of the tracks were easy and too forever to get through, like the Redwood Forest and the one where it went through the Grand Canyon and some other parts.

Love that game.
