Carmageddon: Max Damage.

After the disaster that is Reincarnation, MD is a return to form.
Even if reviewers are panning it because they are missing the point of C:MD.

I would've said Battleborn aswel, but 2K ruined it for me by forcing microtransactions, really, really hope GBX can find a better publisher in the future.

So far my GOTY is Project X Zone 2 will most likely be replaced with the toss up between FFXV or Tales of Berseria.

As of right now Fire Emblem Fates (all three versions) is my favorite of the year easily. Funny that a lot of people here haven't gotten many games this year, I've gotten a bunch so far. Which is odd since I usually have few new games by the middle of the year. Granted, my brother bought most of them, but I still would have gotten some of them since I was interested in the first place.

So Fates has been my favorite, followed by Uncharted 4 and Doom. Then Star Fox Zero, followed by Pokken (which I admit, I really could not get into as much as I wanted to) and I guess Mario and Luigi Paper Jam, but I lost interest in playing a few hours in. I'm worried Mario and Luigi games are going to share the same, bland fate as modern Paper Mario games.

Looking at all the new stuff coming, Fates will be hard to top, Pokemon Sun and Moon could do so, as long as it improves in every regard where X and Y failed. If FF XV is all that it's cracked up to be, so could that, but it's hard to say at this point.

Brace yourself because this may be the most brilliant or the most stupid analysis of a GOTY contender thus far:

Stardew Valley: As soon as I heard the "It's Harvest moon", from everybody I was skeptical, but then I went to play and realize I loved the game, not ony it did everything it could to be different from the series I [kind of used to] love, but it did so many thing greatly, the Minecraft-style inventory and crafting, the bachelor system and the message of the achievements: do you go through the effort of gathering everything you need by planning ahead and working hard on it? Or do you let money solve your problems, basically recreating the routine you got away from to get a farm. So many things to do and so many mysteries to keep coming back to remembered me the reason I play video games for.

And now for the honorable mentions and other games worth mentioning:
Clash Royale: As much I hate the way the game cleverly dodges the pay-to-win criticism through clever manipulation, I have to admit, it's not a full cash-grab, (maybe 80-85%). Yeah, it's wait to get rewards, but it's surprisingly deep, the tower-defense, resource management hybrid really works, I tested various teams with the assets I had and when not trying to nickel and dime you, it's fun. But yeah, the horrible waiting times and the jewel system really turned me off.
Star Fox Zero: As much people harp on its controls, to which I'm not gonna defend, I liked the game, but since it doesn't have a alternate control scheme or a patch for it like Pikmin 3, I really hesitate to pick up and play again especially when I'm tired, but when I do, I go for it.
Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam - I think having two RPG series is taking its toll on both series, I still love the humor, the combat and the puzzle-platforming, but it really adds nothing new. If I have to pick one of the series for them to work full force on is Mario and Luigi because Bowser's Inside Story is one of my favorite RPGs of all time and Luigi is my favorite character (hence my love for Dream Team and Super Paper Mario).
The Witness: As a fan of Zero Escape and Professor Layton I was looking forward for this game, but as much as the puzzles initially grabbed my attention, I got really bored with it
MN9: sigh

Games I have yet to play to have any thoughts on: Salt and Sanctuary (single player mode with splitscreen co-op Dark Souls-esque action? count me in), Superhot (not a fan of shooters, but this one seems interesting), Kirby (a series that never falls on the "yet another X" category)

Like many other people already, I haven't played... hardly any games that actually came out in 2016.

Darkest Dungeon and Grim Dawn had their official releases this year, so that's two I guess.
Yeah, the exact same for me. Both great games, but I think I prefer Grim Dawn. Any Diablo (1 or 2) fan should give it a try.
I'd just recommend it to any isometric ARPG fan. I've never been shy about admitting that I'm a huge fan of Diablo III and could never really get into Diablo II, and Grim Dawn is the only other one that's ever held my interest as effectively.
Heh, didn't expect that. The game seems much more similar to the first two Diablo games.

That is part of it, to be honest. I love the visual style of Diablo II, but I hate how antiquated the actual game is, so the fact that Grim Dawn heavily uses that style itself but in a much more... er... "modern" package makes it far more appealing.

Doom. It captured the quick, mechanics-based combat and relentless exploration that keeps the original game entertaining to this day, and it was handled with such a wondrously refreshing self awareness. From the Doom Marine's utter refusal to give the slightest hint of interest in the storyline that's unfolding around him, to the ludicrously over the top violence just for the SAKE of violence, it's definitely worth the money. Every weapon option felt useful in its own way, they made the chainsaw viciously powerful yet surprisingly well balanced, and there are enough optional upgrades and secrets that every level was a candyland of discovery.

The pistol kinda sucked, but it's not something that comes up too often.

I can't tell. We've had a lot of good games with individually unique aspects worthy of mention, so asking me to choose between them for a GOTY nominee is like asking me to choose which type of mango I like. I don't know, I just like mangoes!

Considering, my personal nominees would be XCOM 2, DOOM 2016, Overwatch and Dark Souls III. I'm keeping a bracket open for No Man's Sky, as I'm hoping the main gameplay loop will justify my salivating at the premise.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE. Laugh if you want, but that game has a ton of personality and I love how it's so cheesy. It looks like the people who worked on it and had lot of fun making it, and that enthousiasm really shines through.

But, I haven't played Zero Time Dilemma yet (avoiding all reviews, trailers and more, so I have no idea what to expect), and I've been drooling since that was announced, so... yeah.

The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine. Sure it's an expansion and not even standalone, but it's got enough content as a AAA game. It's my GOTY.

The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine.
Honestly, while it ain't considered a game, it's impressive and has enough to be seen as one in my eyes.
Heck, I still haven't completed it.

It only makes it easier to support CD Projekt RED in their future exploits... I'm only a little saddened they aren't making more stuff for the Witcher 3, but they've done enough to make me super satisfied. Now only if they tease up about their current game project, Cyberpunk. :'D

Special mentions go to VA-11 Hall-A.
They've made a petite, hyper sex-bot my number one character for the year.

I only have two choices right now. X-Com 2 and Doom are the only 2016 games I've played thus far. Due to the fact that one of them was far less technically screwed up for me, Doom gets my vote.

Edit: Forgot Overwatch. That gets my vote now.
