Buy teh haloz, you have just named pretty much every video game type. I challenge someone to name a game that doesn't fit into one of the above genres in any way.

Racing counts as sports.

I am slightly over generalising here but I'm going to plump for MMORPGs. I tried playing WoW on a friends account for an hour once and found it to be the most intensely boring experience of my life, no joke. I found no fun in the combat, it didn't look particularly good to me and the extreme repetitiveness of the tasks was driving me up the wall. Since WoW is supposed to be the best, I figure things can only get crappier on other games of the same genre.

Like a lot of people have already said, sports games were interesting at one point, but now are pure crap. How many times can they actually re-release "John Madden's Same Fucking Game You've Bought The Last 5 Years In A Row" before people realize that....well, that it's the same fucking game you've bought the last 5 years in a row?

MMO's with monthly fees.

Simple analogy to illustrate my hostility to this kind of shit:
Games are ice creams. You can buy these ice creams at quite a few stores... but if you buy an MMO Ice Cream, the manufacturer will take away your ice cream if you don't cough up some more money.

I like to completely finish my Ice Cream if I want it, once I've paid for it. Maybe a few additional scoops if the ice cream is delicious (these would be expansions, of course).

But I'll never pay extra to get a few extra licks on an Ice Cream, even if it's the most delicious thing on earth (or at least, if that's what other people claim).
so you've also paid only once for gas/water/electricity?

and also only once for the gas in your car?

in fact, you only paid once ever for groceries. Now you get all the rest for free :)

not that I like MMO's, but your analogy sucks monkeyballs ;)

....

OT: my non-likers

1. sports/race/simulation games... all too realistic, not much fantas(y)(tic) to it.
2. MMO's
3. games on my mobile... I wanna play them if I have to wait somewhere for some minutes, but they are horrible designed for mobile play... aaah the good old days of Snake and Space Invader...

I have to go with Racing and sports, I'll play them with friends (Mario Kart DS and maybe NHL), but I won't go out of my way to buy them or play by myself.

sports games. with game prices these days. I could go and buy 3 footballs for $40.
and I dont play Rock band or Guitar hero due to censorship of a really good song due to the lyrics being to suggestive. they almost always mess the song up.

+1 to sports games and +1 to music games. Why not just go play the real thing, even casually? Shooting and RPGs place you in a role that you simply cannot simulate in real life (well unless you actually are in an elite SAS commando unit), hence all genres other than sport appeal to me in some way, depending on mood, wife rep, etc.

Sports Games, i don't mind if they've got a bit of a surreal twist to them but sports Sims like tennis and cricket etc. are so bland and monotonous.

Does anyone else seem to notice the poor quality of graphics associated with these games as well?
I played Top Spin on PS3 the other week and i was appalled at the character animation and just the feel of the aesthetics overall, Surely they could put more effort and better texture work into a game that i'm sure requires hardly anywhere near as much processor power as games like Gears of War or Halo which surpass Topspin in alot of areas.

I mentioned FPS games because, like yahtzee said, most developers creating FPS titles often say,"Let's be like Halo" Most FPS games are pretty much copycat titles. Games that aren't are titles like Portal,Metroid (GOD I LOVE THAT GAME.) COD4 and Bioshock. It isnt that I dislike those genres. Reason why i mentioned games like Guitar Hero because, again, Red Octane pretty much wiped their dicks all over guitar hero, and changed it into yup, a Rock Band clone. Look at games now that try to be a Rock Band Killer. Battle of the Bands, Rock Revolution, GH World tour.

As with sports games, I dont hate them as much when they have a little twist on it. Mario Strikers for instance. That game was an absolute blast. And sports games only ever become fun when you are around people. It's retarded to have people buy the same fucking game over and over again, when really, everything remains unchanged, except for a few things added/removed.

Oh btw

um.... yeah. I named around 6 genres in video games out of a possible what? 50 something? There are only two in that list I sincerely hate. MMORPG's and God games. Racing doesn't count as a sport. You must be mistaking NASCAR. I enjoy racing games a lot, but the thing is, they aren't in the same tier as sports games. They are a seperate genre.

The analogy also sucks, because most MMOs never end. Sure, you might finish the content at that moment, but the developers (aside from Blizzard, apparently) keep adding more to it with updates, so the world evolves and players get new things to see.

As for my least favourite genre...it's definitely sports games. It's not that they exist, it's that every new sports game is just a roster update and you could do those as DLC these days. And the game companies probably would comply to the idea of releasing roster updates to games for like $20 or something if it weren't for people actually buying every new sports game, because apparently playing with last year's roster sucks.

Not a genre, but another pet peeve of mine is the current obsession by western companies to make everything first person. I mean, I have nothing against the perspective, but I'd also like to see more isometric games, more top-down view, more from behind...or some other wacky new perspective I haven't seen. Just having first person games is boring.

JRPGs, with maybe two exceptions. Angsty children with silly hair-cuts and ridiculously large swords saving the world whilst taking turns letting monsters hit them in the face? Pass.

That, or football games. The last good football game ever made was NFL: Blitz for the Nintendo 64. Every other football game just feels like a clone of the others, with a different title on the box.

/agree with football games. Or most sports games in general, for the same reasons as TC. They just re-release the same games with minor graphical upgrades and updated rosters, some of which are already dated by the time the game hits store shelves.

im the last person to deffend the madden frachise ( i enjoyed nfl 2k5 so much it killed me when i heard that the NFL went exculisve with EA) but the fact is the games do change from year to year maybe not enough to justify a purchesse every year i generally get a new football game every other year and this years madden is looking pretty good there appears to be a big update this year.

raceing is a sperate gerne except games based on real raceing circuts like nascar and the f1 series then its a sports game

First person shooters Racing games.
I have never liked them, it just doesn't appeal to me. I love cars and al that but I can't stand racing games.

Sports games. Sport in gaming is wasted on me, as I see gaming as an escape from reality. Or at least to visit the interesting bits of reality, such as war games. Sports games just show me stuff I see all the time in reality.

I prefer not to judge by genre, it really depends on the game. For instance, I love grid but despise burnout. They are both Racing games, but do so differently.
If I had to say one I am consistantly disappointed with, I'd say sports.

Sports games and final fantasy whatever that series is considered.

If you're gonna play football, go and gather your friends

I know I'm gonna get flamed for hating the holiest of games, final fantasy, but so be it.
