what is your town known for

My hometown of Wednesbury is known for pretty much nothing. Although the town where I was born (West Bromwich), a few miles away, was also the birthplace of some old famous actress, Madeline-something or other. Plenty of celebrities come from Birmingham, nearby, and nearby Smethwick is the birthplace of actress Julie Walters. Walsall, where I used to go to school, is also somewhat famous for it's old leather trade, including a leather museum, the Arboretum (and it's yearly illuminations which are actually even better than the Blackpool lights), and again, various old celebrities. My old school was also the school of Jerome K. Jerome (author) and Colin Charvis (former Wales national rugby union player) among others.

Seems to me the only thing my hometown is famous for is being right in the middle of other, more well known places, and not having anything to show itself.

As for my adopted hometown (the place I study and much prefer and want to stay in after uni), Leeds, it's famous for plenty of things. Most of which are related to one of the three main universities. Roundhay Park, nearby, is one of the largest parks in the UK and is also the venue of several concerts performed by Michael Jackson, Robbie Williams and U2, among others. Every year Leeds has it's own music festival (conveniently called the Leeds Festival), and Roundhay Park and Woodhouse Moor are two of the locations of attacks by the Yorkshire Ripper back in the Seventies and Eighties.

My town is known for one street. Sadly. (And apparently some second-rate musicians...the Cribs?)
This street has the longest pub & bar crawl in the country. At one point, Europe.

The Westgate run. Friday nights are amusing, as one can watch morons puke their guts out onto the curb, get into fights with equally moronic people, and slowly kill themselves with liver-poisening.

My city, Calgary, is known for the Calgary Stampede. During the summer, we host a stampede downtown.

I'm pretty sure I heard my town has the most trees in like, either the state or the country as a whole, and our town is the best place to raise children in the country.
Proud? I don't know.

Astoria, New York - A Bronx Tale was filmed here in '92 due to the fact many of the buildings here still held the 1950s look/style that was needed for the film (thus why it was mostly filmed in Queens and not the Bronx), as well as the indie film A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints (which is about the director's late childhood growing up in Astoria). Also, the church not a block from me is where a major blackout started (due to an exploding transformer that set a dude's uninsured brand new car on fire while he was getting a haircut) that lasted for as much as nine days in some areas.

For being the ancient capital of Scotland, for giving rise to the bands Big Country and Nazareth and being the birth place of Jethro Tull's frontman. Also Andrew Carnegie, who is responsible for most of Pittsburgh's steel industry boom and whom Carnegie Hall in New York was named after (though we have one too, so nyah) was born here.

People of the world, I give you...Dunfermline.

Hey American Escapists: Remember back in 2005, 2006 that Highway Sniper? The bus driver who was shot [I think he was the first victim] was shot about 300 yards from my GF's [at the time] house and about 1/2 of a mile from where I live. His attacks were almost entirely based in my town ^^; He was then caught at a scenic overlook near where my Dad lived >.>

I think my town is famous for having a street completely dedicated to partying. It's entire length is filled with clubs and discotheques, only interrupted by the one or two grill bars or shawarma joints that are also on the street.
