I love a good story, therefore its my primary decision in choosing a game. I'm not so fussed about the mechanics of a game (unless its a 2D beat em in which case I will avoid it like the plague) because I'm open to new ideas.

Is it fun?

A good story or fun mechanics can really help make a game more fun, but in then end if I'm not enjoying it, I won't play it.

Case in point, I'm currently trying my hand at playing Fallout 3 and I'm not having that much fun with it. While I can see how some people might might like it, but the plot is slower paced than any JRPG I've ever played and the VATS system is both buggy and completely unbalanced. Tack on some robotic NPCs with no depth and boring scenery, and I'm really not enjoying it...

By comparison, a game like Crackdown had almost no story, and no other major characters except your silent protagonist, but the gameplay was so fun that it's one of my favorite 360 games.

Simply put, it's a game. If you aren't having fun with it then it's not a game, it's work.

Most important aspect of a good game is simply, being fun. Then a good story and gameplay mechanics, after that comes art direction, originality, graphics etc. But being fun and immersive is simply the most important.

A good game has 2 things

1. Something that makes the game special.

2. Something that keeps the game from not being repetitive

Gameplay. Something that you enjoy doing and can repeat a lot while enjoying the small differences each time.
This is why I love sandbox games that give you a decent amount of choice and freedom. They are the reasons why I love spiderman 2, prototype, destroy all humans and crysis.

its most about the story and maybe more a open world and a great way of combat, like for instance oblivion had a great GREAT combat system (could use work but i like to be able to draw whenever i want and kill whoever i want) and then theres story, like maybe wow and a mix of dragon age, and ofc it may be middelage or future or present day else its normally boring,

Storyline, gameplay, character interaction are all important factors to me when playing a game. If those are good then the game usually turns out to be a bust for me.

Giant plot twist. I love when the game gets turned upside down and all the sudden you can't trust someone you've been with the whole time.

it depends on its genre but some smooth graphics (like those in Metal Slug) and a giant world to explore (like TES:IV) and a gripping story
