Seriously, it's super boring now and overplayed. There are some games where the mechanics shine through and make it great and there are some that survive (and thrive) on a strong story. I like that we have both. I love KOTORII's story as much as I love Europa Univeralis 4's mechanics. It just depends on what mood I'm in at that particular moment.
This.

You can't really weigh Street Fighter IV's gameplay Vs Mass Effect's story, just like you can't compare a Quentin Tarantino movie to Dragon Ball Z. Apples and Oranges. I can have as much fun with Devil May Cry 3's combat as I can with Skyrim's Story and Lore.
And the idea that there are only two schools of what makes a proper game is silly. Gameplay and story are not the only factors when developing a game. Take Kingdom Hearts for example, It doesn't have great gameplay, the combat is just serviceable and the story is far from the best you could find in a JRPG, however the fact that you can visit Disney worlds, interact with Disney characters and do that while listening to an awesome soundtrack that further immerses you in those worlds makes for an amazing experience in the eyes of many.

There are many game genres and some rely more on gameplay, some rely more on story, some rely more on a solid aesthetic or building a world you want to get lost in, and some even rely on healthy balance of all this things and more. Its a good thing that we have this much variety, this way all itches can be scratched.
