What makes a gamer?

Not certain which forum this belongs in exactly, but the title says it all.

What is it that makes a gamer a gamer? Is it time played? Is it playing games of a particular sort or quality? Can it be calculated using a ratio of entertainment(video games) over entertainment(other)?

Can it even be pinned down to any set of variables or is it a combination(set of combinations)?

In general terms no.

But personally I define a gamer as someone whose an avid player who enjoys the expanse of genres and understands and is at least somewhat skilled at each of his games.
As in one must know what each action is and how it is done and what it affects.

To me, being a gamer comes down to the frequency in which one plays video games. It also comes down to the enjoyment they get out of those games.

Anyone who enjoys games enough to play them rather than doing other leisure activities. Eg. Someone who uses their spare time to play games rather than doing other things.

Gaming as a hobby sounds about right.
if one used to do games enough to do it at least semi-regurly but lost access to games, then I would still count that person as a gamer as long as they planned on trying to gain access to gaming again.
If your into gaming and play games then your a gamer.

There's a big difference between a casual and hardcore gamer, for example.

Its a person who will play a game, no matter the graphical style, the color pallette, lack of violence, etc., because it is fun.

To me, a gamer is someone who not only plays games, but appreciates games for what they are, and that's an art form. It's all well and good to play the occasional game, but a gamer takes it a step further. I haven't been playing too many games lately what with school and work, but I think I'm still a gamer because I follow what's going on in the community and see video "games" as more than just "games".

A person who owns more than any of the Wii series games (sports, fit, music) or Guitar Hero and its kin.

Basically I think a gamer is anyone who plays a game with a normal controller. (Or the Wii remote held sideways)

I judge a gamer by those that love the boring parts too. You know, the love exploration to get every single last treasure, they love the level grind, and they even love the part of the game that keep handing the player's ass back to them. A true gamer alternates between saying "Thank you sir, can I have another" and "this game will not beat me" in one sitting.

They are the ones that often rage quit and come back for more.
