It depends, Gamer I think covers "People who play games often" but from there you have subcategories like Casual Gamer and what not... We'll that's how I would define it :)

Having sex and thinking ''I could be shooting stuff now''? Nah, I'm just shittin' ya! :p Loving games and playing them, I guess. It is pretty simple, it doesn't matter if it is Halo or Shadow Hearts as long as you are really enjoying it :)

I dunno. I love Fallout, thought Mass Effect scored high on the lameosity scale, liked HL (2), liked no Halo but the opening sequence of 1, worship Grim Fandango, play every sports game, fellate Bioshock on a daily basis, etcetera etcetera. Also my favorite game ever is GTA: San Andreas. So.

being a gamer has nothing to do with specific titles really.

If anything a gamer is simply someone who sees video games as a valid form of entertainment and enjoys them to the same extent as a non gamer enjoys watching a film or reading a book.
That pretty much fills the umbrella term of Gamer, then people split it based on hours played, preferred genres and of course the level of crap their willing to put up with.

Casual gamer would mean a person who plays games to pass the time between doing something more enjoyable or meaningful. No real care as to skill, completion or anything else, just whiling away a few more minutes.

Hardcore gamer would be a person who sees gaming as a serious hobby or sport. An experience to devote a specific period of time to so as to get what they feel is the best experience from their titles.

Then there's probably about 50 more flavours of gamer to suit your tastes after that.

Everybody here is right. You game, you're a gamer. There do seem to be gamer snobs though, who don't consider you a gamer if you don't have good scores or whatever. Those people need to grow up. I mean, I've been told I'm not a real gamer because I play WoW, and then as soon as I bought Halo 3, the same people said, "NOW you're a gamer!"
I consider my mum a gamer. She plays Prince of Persia, WoW, House of the Dead, Dead Rising and a few others. If you love playing games, you're a gamer.
Yes, you read it right, I have a gamer mom.

To me, you're a gamer if you're passionate about the medium.

Playtime means fairly little to me, seeing as not everyone has the same amount of time to spend. But that doesn't mean that he or she cannot love the medium, can't be excited about an upcoming release or simply loves videogames.

That definition also excludes people who just play Wii Sports or Peggle every now and then.

You're not a casual gamer, you have never bought a "My Little Pony" Game, and you don't own a Wii.

Also you can hold your own in a gaming debate.

If you play games regularly then you're a gamer. I don't get this other "gamer" title where you have to be able to beat Megaman 2 without dying or whatever.

What is a gamer?
A miserable pile of worn discs.

No no, but in all seriousness, I would consider a "Gamer" as someone who regards gaming as their hobby, as well as understanding and appreciating the medium. While you don't necesarilly have to be good at it, if you're passionate about gaming, you're a gamer.

Having played Max Payne, the first Medal of Honor, the second Prince of Persia, Age of Empires 1, and Oni.

Goddamnit, now I got all nostalgic.

Generally, among the community of people who really enjoy games/play them constantly, they do love HL2 and they do find Halo to be a sub-par game...
