Sex. Shoe-horned in love interests. Clunky and sparsely placed quicktime events. Little to no character development. Unintuitive and overly complex combat system. Poor characterisation. Dull and uninteresting areas. Boring gameplay.

What makes a great game is a developer setting their sights on making a certain type of game, and achieving it absolutely. I think of Yahtzee's Painkiller review when I say this. Painkiller isn't going to change the world of gaming, but it wants to be a badass shooter that's a lot of fun. All the design elements work to achieve that goal, and it therefore succeeds.

One of the overused cliches that I hear game reviewers use is that a game is "better than the sum of its parts." But I think that's what makes a game great. Take Starcraft for example. Individually, the graphics, gameplay, units, and everything else are not that special. However, all of these elements work together to make a tight, fast, fun, and competitive strategy game. It's about taking elements and making them work in the context of the game.

The perfect game. If only somebody would make it. *sigh*
Hell I'd play it. Better than what we've got these days (ho ho! I bet you feel quite silly now Games Industry! Yes you do. That's because I burned you. With fire.)

A good game is a game that you just enjoy and have fun playing. Even though others might hate it, long as you like it then its all good.

Wow. Thats a really nice way to look at it. So I guess in the opinions of those who have posted a good game is one that just tries to acheive what it shuold rather than everything that it possibly can?

There are lots and lots of good games, but truly great games are few and far between. In my opinion, what makes a great game is quality. Any genre of game from any gaming era can be great if it is made really well. Games that have very few glitches (lets face it, zero glitches is probably impossible); a solid control scheme that works the way it was intended to on the platform(s) it plays on; well written dialog (if the game even has any. Some games have no need for it); if the game has a story, it's one that is interesting enough to make you want to see the ending (again if there is even a need for a story); etc.

I could go on, but basicly it comes down to overall quality. Games that are sloppily put together or have certain aspects that just seem to be poorly done keep even games with some degree of a "fun factor" from being truly great.

the question of what makes a game good is a subjective one, therefore I can pull this answer:

It has to be fun.

that's all. If it's a fun game, and you enjoy it, it's a good game :)

What makes a good game? Fun gameplay. Everything else is window dressing, although how well-done that dressing is will have an impact on how the game's received. Well... A good story is also pretty key. I'd say story and gameplay are about even. A game can have good gameplay and nothing else and be a good game, or a game could have a good story and nothing else and still be a good game.

I suppose the ultimate game is one where everything is good.

Please... it wasn't THAT great. I played through it twice, but it was far from perfect. There were quite a few glitches and moments that pulled me out of the game.

As for Halo 3, it's just a mediocre shooter. Not great. Not terrible. Just right dab in the middle.

What makes a good game? How much fun you can have with it and how much you can replay it. After all, if a game is only fun for 5 minutes and then it's over, that's hardly getting your money's worth.
Everything "featured" in FO3, not FO3. execution is vastly more important.

If you have a good story, and nothing else, that doesn't really strike me a as a good game. That was the trap that Metal Gear Solid 4 fell into. I think you need to have a good ratio of gameplay to story to make a good game.

Alot of the things that people have already mentioned, but also playtesting. If the developer doesn't get people to play their game enough before it is released, then they will be tragically unaware that it needs a lot more work.
Also a 'it's done when it's done' rather than an 'Oh my god Christmas' philosophy to release dates really, really helps in many cases.

SOS SOS SOS SOS SOS SOS SOS (Sorry I didn't have time to create a new post):

I need a little advice...

What is the difference between the XBOX 360 that is $200, $400, $600 US? What is the extra memory necessary/most used for?

I need some expert advice on buying a raffle item for my group's Christmas concert? All suggestions would be helpful.

Thats if you have lowered your standards. My friends have but I cannot, it's not in my blood!
What do you mean "lowered"? I have had that standard all my life... you have no standards in saying such a thing -_^

A great game is one that doesn't sacrifice story for gameplay or vice-versa and comes with a healthy dose of immersion. By immersion I don't mean some nebulous concept to be discussed and pored over by nerds. I mean good, old-fashioned suck-you-inness, where you forget about the clock on the wall and the world around you.

1.a good combo of story and game play
2.balanced combat so it isn't pathetically easy but not omgwtf hard
3.graphics
4.multi-platform (not necessary but it's nice)
5.fun to play offline and online
6.some comedy so it doesn't get up it's own ass with morals
7.sound/voice acting has to be good
8.some logical reason for why the bad guys are doing what they are doing (not just "this guy is evil, deal with it")
9.NO GLITCHES
10.you need to actually have fun!

i don't think any game will be "the greatest" (aside from the half-life series :D) because there is too many variables for a game to go wrong

oh, 11. people who play online must take a voice-register test to confirm that you don't sound like a fucking six year old with a high-pitched scream when you lose
