What makes a good thread?

Hey folks. So we've seen them, the threads with countless pages of posts. Usually a self evaluating thread, a news thread or... a ZP thread of course =) Although sometimes you would see threads that you would never have believed would have gotten so many replies.

So in your own opinion, what do you reckon makes a good post? The question? The title? The thread maker? The thread makers avatar(that ones a bit silly, but hey, could be the reason )? Or could it be some magical enchantment that the thread maker has cast on his or her thread to draw people and entice them into answering?

Something with not a lot of words that everyone can go "me too" in without ever respond to anything else in the thread... but it is a topic that is near and dear enough for those two people who never fail to argue some mundane point for 3 pages in the midst of all the "me too" posts...

I just realized you framed your post a bit different from the title, which I ignored. The first thing you brought up was "pages and pages." That does not make a good thread. A good thread is one that I find interesting for having read it.

Even if it doesn't go past page one, someone posting up a piece on North Korea and linking to some videos on the subject- is a good thread.

I think it's the power in its hands. Or perhaps its quest for glory.

Or they got lucky and everyone feels like upping their post count at the same time.

A thread that inspires thoughtful but brief responses and cunningly avoids utterly divisive and irresolvable issues (fanboy baiting, gun control and so forth). The key is to ensure responses are interesting enough to read but short enough that people don't just skip right to the end.
