I'm going to keep this short and simple.

How do you define a zombie?

Does it have to be reanimated or just infected?

Is it only able to shuffle or can it sprint?

Can it go one on one with a velociraptor?

Does it prefer boxers or briefs?

Discuss.

(You don't have to awnser the questions but if you really want to you can.)

Well, I've always thought a zombie was just a reanimated corpse. They have all the attributes of the person re-alived, except tenfold.

If they're a big bugger, then they're a HUGE bugger when they're a zombie.

They can see, and can't run fast (even the ones who were fast in their lifetimes) for fear of breaking their feeble, rotting legs. But they can hit hard... And can't smile.

Shooting them doesn't matter, because they've got no blood. The only way to kill a zombie is to blow off it's head.

So a zombie to me is a reanimated corpse (reanimated either by some need for vengeance by the soul of the departed or some puppet-master), who is very strong but has no emotions and can't run or smile. You need to tear off it's head to kill it.

That adequately answers the FIRST part of the question. As to the second part (why do we care?)... I don't.

To me a zombie is a reanimated corpse. Their strength comes from not having any sense of pain. It would make sense for them to be slow, because the muscles need energy and the organs all cease function, not to mention natural decay, unless this is some nightmarish dawn of the dead scenario where even a 300 pound person runs like Michael Johnson in his prime. No emotions, memory, or intelligence. Destroying the brain is the way to kill them. I would say heightened senses (to a degree)

In my opinion, a zombie must move sluggishly, speak entirely in grumbles and the word "Brains", have a desire to devour the previously mentioned brains, and understand that if someone has a chainsaw, it's time for it to die. If it does not have these characteristics, it's dead to me(Haha, unintentional pun).

I would really perfer any zombie type as long as it only dies by headshot mainly because movies where you can't kill the damn thing are so stupid. Everything can die if it is alive.

The "living dead", not, more like a biohazardous monster that only has the need to feed on other living things with meat, plus you can't come back when you are dead even if your brain is still in tact, zombies are either infected humans who are still alive, but have been in a deep slumber for a few hours the rise again not form being undead, but from simply being transformed in a way.

A zombies are humans that have had a virus introduced into their blood strem that alters the cells and mutates. They Infected human body is shut down for less then a minute and the brain restarts. The infected focus on one thing a uncontrollable desire for human flesh. They can only walk.

However all zombies should be scared of pool cues and the musical stylings of Queen.

They should never run, but can play video games

Zombies, according to Max Brooks, are humans infected by the virus solanum, which slowly "kills" the person, disableing their body, and bodily functions, excluding the brain. Zombies are not super strong, they can only be as strong as the person they were whilst "alive", so they can run, and due to the fact that they are never worn out, nor do the become tired (redundant?) they can run much longer and further then humans. The only way to kill a zombie is to destroy its brain, if you simply chop its head off, it is still a threat. To dispose of a zombie you should use fire. People who have been dead for a short, or long time before the virus was spread, will not be popping out of the ground, why you ask, its simply because of the long process that is the burial system which takes 1-4 weeks. Zombies can how ever smell things up to 1 mile away (give or take the breeze). Zombies will very very slowly decompose, this is due to the fact of the virus inhabiting the body, orginisms are repelled by the zombies' body. And should the day come that a zombie attack happens, it is strongly suggested that you DON'T go and try to kill as many zombies as possible, just find a building that can wilstand zombies, and has plenty of supplies. Just remember there is no safe only safer. BTW The Zombie Survival Guide is my bible.<-- solanum zombie, Voodoo zombies differ GREATLY

How do you define a zombie?
-A human whose primary life functions have ceased to function and thus is classified as "dead" and within minutes, the brain reactivates, while all other internal organs remain dead.

Does it have to be reanimated or just infected?
-Reanimated. Being infected just means you haven't got long.

Is it only able to shuffle or can it sprint?
-This is tough because the modern idea of what a zombie does seems to say that zombies can sprint like in Dawn of the Dead (2004) but classical reasoning states that they shuffle and cannot move very fast.
My opinion is that they move faster than a shuffle, but cannot full on sprint. Since when you sprint, especially when theres incentive, you get some adrenaline pumping. Zombies have no blood flow so adrenaline cannot be made or introduced into their blood stream.
The blood meanwhile will succumb to gravity and pool into the zombies legs, which if anything, will slow it down more.

Can it go one on one with a velociraptor?
No....well, maybe....No.

Does it prefer boxers or briefs?
Its a scientific fact, 4 out of 5 zombies prefer Hanes boxers over the leading competitor.

I've always thought of a zombie Resident Evil style, but the half life style head crab cersion would be cool too.

How do you define a zombie?
Stupid flesh eating berk.

Does it have to be reanimated or just infected?
Infected mainly but if recently deceaced infection would reanimate body.

Is it only able to shuffle or can it sprint?
SHUFFLE!!! It's a decaying stupid thing! How can it run?!

Can it go one on one with a velociraptor?
In a word possibly... I many words. "velociraptor scream" "Zombie moan" crash spatter ssshhhhick pleeeghe... drip drip drip, Zombie Death. Velociraptor infected Vilociraptor becomes Zombie.

Does it prefer boxers or briefs?
Whatevers loose and unrestricting.

In real life, a person who has had the part of their brain/soul responsible for higher cognitive functions displaced, usually through drugs like Tetrodotoxin, Datura Stramonium, Scopolamine, Ketamine or Phencyclidine.

Well that's my layman's explanation I reached through study of Haitian Voodoo & observation & personal experience of recreational drug (mis)use.

For me a zombie is an undead human that you can only kill by destroying his brain.

"Zombie" fills a lot of roles. There are Romero zombies, where the dead walk, and no one knows for certain why. There are the "Living Dead" zombies, where a chemical reanimates the dead bodies. There are "infected" a la 28 Days Later and the like. There's the Flood, the Borg, and all that kind of stuff.

They're all zombies.

Zombies are creatures that have been stripped of their souls/higher brain functions and now serve the very basic needs (usually eat). They are often cannibalistic, but not always. They almost always possess the ability to increase their number very rapidly. Basically anything that calls up the horror of the human becoming the inhuman and operating at a reduced capacity (yet being effective due to numbers) are zombies.

Lotsa zombie threads lately, ain't there?
(Oh my god! Is LordOmnit back?
No, he's not.)

Anyways.
Zombie in LordOmnit's Terms World:
Contains the zombie disease whether or not it became a zombie upon death or was 'reanimated'
All higher brain functions are non-existant and lower brain functions are controlled by the disease (although the body will still rot swiftly in hot and humid conditions or freeze in cold conditions since blood is not pumped, body heat is not produced, and the body is not maintained)
They cannot see but react to sound
The disease is spread through bodily fluids such as saliva (the most common mode of transition)
They do not attack other undead due to specific smells (hormones or rotting)
Sustained energy comes from slow self-cannibalization of the body with things unimportant to movement first
It normally moves slowly, but can have small bursts of speed if a sound is close enough to it
As the disease is centrally located in the brain to control the rest of the body and thusly severe damage of the brain causes the zombie to cease movement (although don't get the goo in you afterwards unless you really wanna be a zombie)
Fire also will kill them as it will denature the proteins in the zombie disease and body, rendering them just a burnt corpse

Velociraptor vs. Zombie = Velociraptor eating zombie = Velocizombie

Zombies prefer panties.
