I like to play this game with some of my favorites because I can't always explain to myself and other people what it is about a specific game that keeps me coming back. For me the main offender is Counter-Strike since I've been playing since...I don't even know, potentially 1.1 but probably 1.3. So, what is it that has kept me coming back all these years?

1. It's easy to get into a game. Even in the WON days you could turn on your computer and be playing in no time.

2. Rounds are short so you can turn it into a competition over the long term or just play a few rounds then quit.

3. It's easy to pick up but difficult to master. CS has a weird learning curve which has change dramatically in CS:S but it's still there. You start out bad but you can get better very quickly, however, the jump up to professional is enormous. So, it's fun to play in pubs but it rewards you for spending time practicing.

4. CS is very social. When I took a break to play CoD4 I was amazed at how quiet games were. People took it way too seriously and there was rarely any chatter. Part of CS's success in this matter is flexibility in how servers are run including the most important feature, alltalk. You can have fun and play terribly just by getting online and goofing around with a bunch of strangers.

5. CS lends itself to competition. There isn't much luck involved (compared to other FPS's), it's easy to distinguish between yourself and enemies, maps are small enough that strategy matters and large enough that you can actually implement it and there is a wide variety of weapons.

I think that's good for now but I've always liked doing the same thing with Starcraft, Warcraft 3, Dawn of War, Call of Duty, Final Fantasy, and other games or series of games which have lasted for a while.

Isn't this just basically a mini-review thread? If anyone wants to review a game, they should just put it in the 'Reviews' section and be done with it.

I was thinking more along the lines of trying to figure out the reasons why certain games or series hang on so long. What is it that makes a specific shooter better than it's competition or a specific RTS better than it's competition?

A while back there was a thread here which did a very good job of explaining why Starcraft has survived for so long and why it is perfect for competition. Starcraft is a good game with a great balance, story line, and graphics (for it's time), however, what makes it so perfect for competition is a lack of luck (no critical hits or misses), easily distinguishable units, clarity of objective (it's easy to see resources, your enemy, pick out specific buildings, etc), and it is easy to get online or set up LAN to play. These aren't the "greatest hits" of why Starcraft is great but they are some of the biggest contributors to why it has stayed prominent for so long.

Developers seem to miss points like these frequently when they come out with something new and it's not because they don't want to copy an existing game many of the points in both my CS and Starcraft lists could be lifted without directly copying each game but they seem to be passed over on a regular basis.

Dawn of War is a perfect example. It's got great graphics, gameplay, and it's fun to pit yourself against other people, however, the support sucks, the online play is atrocious and it's a pain to get it fully set up (you have to have every single DoW game installed to access all the races). These are all fixable and any failure of DoW's in the overall gaming community is no one's fault but the developers themselves because they ignored these basic points.

Kingdom Hearts 2 is good because it's... fun.

Who cares if they sodomized parts of the franchise if its fun. And before you guys take this the wrong way, if they ruin a story beyond repair, or completely screw up an otherwise fine control scheme then yes, I have a problem. Gamers these days are jackasses, constantly crucifying games because one aspect of it was experimented with and proved to be a failure. I've played games in a series because I've generally enjoyed the story while the game play made me visibly cringe at times, and I've played games where I have to mute the game but I can still deal with it because its to much damn fun to throw fireballs or granades at someone. My two cents, flame away.
