I started reading the extra punctuation columns last week and I came across the manly vs. macho one and I started thinking, what does make a real man? What do you consider to be what makes a man a man? What is your definition of masculinity?

It may be a clichƩ but I've always stood behind the good old "stick up for what you believe in, protect the weak, responsibility to his family and friends" etc as masculinity, though I suppose there is the argument that those are the calling of any decent person, man or woman.

I think a man is someone whos so self assured of their own manlyness they dont need to fit a steriotype or fill a checklist to be a goddam man. A real man is a man regardless of what they do. They do whatever the hell they want. A real man could ride a unicorn through a rainbow into a giant pink explosion and STILL be a man because nothing makes a real man unmanly. He doesnt have to be tough or strong or emotionless, a man is someone who just doesnt give a single solitary fuck about how manly he appears to others, only how manly he sees himself.

Just as children try desperately to be mature and fail, anyone trying to be manly is instantly unmanly. When you understand that manliness comes from within and not from others opinions on what is and isnt manly then you are a man.

Also a certain amount of road walking yet to be determined.

A true man is a person who can be a lazy bacon sandwich eating slob without caring what people think of them, it is only when you put yourself into a noodle/bacon/dr pepper induced coma in front of the TV that you reach true enlightenment. Jokes aside, I think that actually is more masculine than giving a shit about alpha male, getting huge muscles and being a stud etc, when did true men actually care what others thought of them?

On a bit more of a serious note, I think men that resist emotion are a lot less manly than those that get upset/passionate/romantic whenever the time is right, even if it is only when it is needed. I think the current stereotype of a manly man is terrible, and can't understand why anybody would want to be an emotionless hunk of meat having meaningless sex every now and again.

The power in his hand, his quest for glory, the woman in his arms*, and the way he fights every day.
