Playing games makes you a gamer. The same way reading a book makes you a reader. Simple as that, I don't think that there need be any more criteria than that.

If you chose, as a recreational activity, to play a video game instead of another form of entertainment, then you are a gamer. This would be your own video game, that you own on a system that you own. Plopping out some farmville does not make you a gamer. I know people how hate games, to the point of making fun of them, that will play some farmville.

It's the fact that I not only play games (and have been doing so for about 20 years), but view it as my primary hobby and invest considerable time in the medium and most things surrounding it; heck, recently I even wrote my BA thesis (in part) on the subject. In essence, I'm fascinated by the medium and immerse myself in it, stay up-to-date on current events related to it and try to expand my horizons (including those outside of gaming) through it.
do you think you'll ever get sick of it? (some people seem to)

I mean I supose gaming changes more rapidly than other medioums due to being tied directly to technology, so I dont really see it "stagnating" so to speak

I mean unless it takes a direction that you dont like...
Right now video games are branching out into some directions I certainly don't like, but I do appreciate the medium's increased/increasing mainstream appeal and acceptance.

I don't see myself getting sick of it any time soon, even though I have the occasional phase where I steer clear of it in favor of other media, such as novels - you know, variatio delectat.
