I'd recommend Guild Wars. For me the combat is pretty much unmatched for an MMO, its fast paced and skill based. Also its one of few good MMOs that aren't anything like WoW. Besides, its one of the few MMOs with a decent story and its completely free after you purchase it.

APB looked like it was going to be good, but I've heard lots of bad stuff about it. The payment model also looks terrible.

An MMO you mean?

I hear Champions Online is great.
That's not even funny...just kinda cruel.

I'd say try Fallen Earth.
...?

All I ever hear is good thing about Champions Online.
Champions is good to begin with, leveling and crafting your own dream super hero is an awesome time. But when you get to end game the fun seems to stop, they are bringing out these new Adventure packs to help with end game but we will have to wait and see.

TF2 does spring to mind, the Engi update is coming (some are saying this Wednesday!) and that will cause an influx of players to return although many will role Engineers. However you can easily roll Demo or Spy or Heavy and just score some easy points.

Well if you can wait for a couple of months then go for Lotro (Lord of the Rings Online) because there are rumours which say that they will make it free. Maybe I'll try it a bit again if that happens.

Beat me to it. I don't really play anymore, but it does kinda fit what the OP wants. If you aren't big on socialising, then Maple is hell to level on. If you are, then you'll find people to help through it all pretty easily. Also, the different classes and sub-classes are quite diversed, and if you don't mind a few bad members of the community, then it can be quite fun.

Dofus. It has 12 Classes and a good social factor. It also has a Free to Play area to get used to everything.

depends what you like really...not gonna talk about f2p mmos, coz they generally suck and for most, if u wanna be competitive, you'll end up paying more than the subscription per month.

if it's the classic fantasy rpg with trolls, gnomes, dwarfs and tree loving elf hippies, wow's honestly the best.
aion is a grindfest (srsly, didn't play but heard it's grind paradise...like hardcore legend of mir or other korean mmo grind), age of conan is shit (still, which is kinda amazing), haven't played champions online but i hear it's meh, LotRO seems to be heading in the right direction after a somewhat disappointing start, so you're left with warhammer, which i keep hearing from friends that it's quite a good wow copy.

if orcs and gnomes are not a requirement and you are above 18 years old, play eve. best game out there imo, from a design and gameplay perspective. most would agree it's right there after wow, on #2. free expansions coming out twice a year, new gameplay mechanics out regularly (not the same arena, bg, instance, raid gameplay with a new layer of paint). if you are capable or making friends, just do the tutorials and in two-three months you'll basically be doing end game shit. or in about the same time as your average MMO.

and if nothing pleases you, wait for APB, which should hopefully be just awesome. it's seen a lot of praise, but probably worth it...tho i'm a bit concerned by the fact that the release date has been pushed back a couple of times already.

TL;DR: wow's the best, then eve, then warhammer and lotro...f2p are shit

PS scratch lotro, they're making it f2p witch means you'll have to buy shit to enjoy the complete playing experience.

so TL;DR2: wow...if not, eve...if not, warhammer...if not, wait for apb...if not, don't bother really

The Kingdom Of Loathing might be worth a look, it's an adventure game that parodies other typical genres and clichés. Available classes are accordion thief, disco bandit and so on as opposed to elves, dwarves, etc.

You could have just described TF2, but you mentioned WoW so im guessing you want a MMO, something i cant help you with.
Meh..TF2 isn't all its hyped up to be. Its alright I guess, but nothing special.
I agreed with the first part of your post. It's more than it's hyped up to be.

As for MMOs, if you want something that pretty much requires teamwork and group play, pick up FFXI right now and prepare to waste your life.

I want to start a multiplayer game - one the relies on groups and socialising to get through it. I don't mind grinding (To a point) and I prefer something that has a good range in classes. I've played WoW in the past so I don't want to play that... Suggestions?
Can you mention some restraints or specific conditions the game should live up to?

I am personally waiting for All Points Bulletin, but ive heard from beta-testers that it's glichty and have loads of bugs, and is released way too soon for its own good (Somewhat like Global Agenda).

I agree. Nice 2D art-style, good side-scroller, free to play (though it does have certain items and such that you have to pay to have), fun classes. A very good game.

Guild Wars is incredibly team based, to the point that it's pretty impossible to solo the game. You may have troubles finding other people in missions, though. Some of the player base has gotten bored of it.
