I'll second Chrono Cross. If I had to repopulate my PS1 library it would be the first game I tracked down. But going for unmentioned lesser known greats...

Try to find 'Kagero: Tecmo's Deception 2." Story and translation are weak, controls are pretty bad... but it may me the most fun you can have with a ps1. It's a 3rd person trap setting and torture based combat game. Think Marquis de Sade via Wile E. Coyote's ACME catalouge. And the sequel "Deception 3: Dark Delusion" is good as well. Just don't get "Tecmo's Deception" the first game. Totally unplayable.

I can only think of one that I can't see mentioned here so far: Future Cop: LAPD.

Also, I'd like to express my unmitigated joy of all the Dino Crisis love.

Ee, they don't make 'em like they used to...

Driver (also known as Driver: you are the wheelman) is the only game you need to get. It's not a racer, either, it's the finest hollywood cop car chase extravaganza ever made. The Film Director feature and survival game give it a ton of replayability too, and don't get me started on what happens when you tap the underside of a car sitting on it's side...

I'd say Suikoden 1 & 2 like others but yes it is very expensive. I have them though :D Actually I have 2 copies of Suikoden 2.

Chrono Cross is one of the best RPGs on the system, I had to import it as it has never been released in EU for some reason. Glad I did. Equally Parasite Eve and Valkyrie Profile. (Also never got EU releases :/)

Abe's Odyssey and Abe's Exodus

Dino Crisis and Dino Crisis 2

Alundra is amazing for a Zelda clone. Not so much the second one.

Breath Of Fire 3 - It's a bit plodding and long winded but boy is it good once you get into it.

Front Mission 3

Einhander (No EU release :/)

FF Tactics (No EU release :/)

Xenogears (no EU release :/)

wow looking at it the EU really got shafted for all the really good games during the psx era. Glad I bought that second hand US playstation. Almost all my favourite games from the era I wouldn't have been able to play without it.....

EDIT: Oh and Fear Effect, seriously, nothing like it and the end segment is incredibly powerful.

[Air Wolf theme] Oh, how I coveted that game. Pew pew pew! Take that, miscreants! Think you can smuggle on my watch? Get strafed by rockets and have hyper-velocity missiles up the wazoo! :3

Croc and Spyro are the only games I played on my PS1 (other than Speed Freaks, which is a racing game)

I guess they were 3D platformy-adventurey games. So if you like that kind of thing, I'd recommend them.

Mmmm, yes...good stuff, good stuff *starts writing down games*

>.>

<.<

*Hides notebook* Yes! The PS1! Umm...

Wild Arms has only been mentioned once. That deserves another mention. Um...

Valkyrie Profile? Nope, mentioned. But god, that voice acting D: Not as bad as RE1, but still, bad enough...

Friggin A, all of the good ones are taken already...fuck it, I'll just endorse pretty much everything already said. GET THEM ALL!!!!!

The only one ive not seen in this discussion that i could pitch is Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere.

Yes, the international versions are a shadow of what the Japanese version is, but its a damn good arcade flight sim if you happen to be looking for one.

- Wild 9
- The Adventures of Lomax
- Heart of Darkness
- Klonoa

Don't believe they were mentioned, although I did read over the thread in a hurry. All of the above are less mainstream, but SO, SO good!

You're dealing with possibility the best collection of software to ever exist, it's more like "Which of these already suggested should I not get?" The answer to which is "None," get all of them.

I have to mention the original Grandia. Cartoony JRPG, light-hearted but HUGE, and surprisingly immersive. The music is amazing, and the battle system is still hailed as pure genius. This is my personal favourite game of all time.

Also, Legend of Dragoon. Somewhat more serious JRPG, with plot twists out of a soap opera and a rich, diverse cast of playable characters. Some parts of this game will feel more technologically advanced than others, the result of a development process spanning more than three years. It has also recieved some criticism for "borrowing" heavily from similar games. As a whole, however, LoD stands proudly on its own, providing a unique journey through a unique world - and with four discs, you'll get a LOT of game for your money!

Platform-wise, I hereby support everybody who has suggested the Spyro trilogy before me. This is platforming bliss, as good as it gets. DEFINITELY buy the Spyro trilogy.

As for Crash Bandicoot: You really can't go far wrong. Crash and Spyro were pretty much tied for the position of "official PlayStation mascot" for most of the PS1 era, and I don't think there ever was a clear winner. While I personally prefer Spyro, for no reason I can really put my finger on, I have to say that "Crash 3: Warped" is an absolutely fantastic game which anybody with a PS1 and a pulse needs to own.

Honestly everyone has the big ones covered. Only things I might add would be the Fear Effects, Clock Tower, and Wild Arms.

Oh, and I don't think I've seen Parasite Eve 1&2 mentioned.

My biggest suggestion would be to mod that sucker so it can swap discs (doesn't cost much, doesn't endanger the hardware). Once I did that I just started burning everything I could think of, and really that's the only way to play some games such as the trippy Japanese exclusive LSD: The Dream Emulator.

I just picked up a PS1, which games should I get for it?
I'm not huge on racing games, though everything else is fair game
Legend of the Dragoon. Honestly one of the better RPGS i played on my PS1

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. Seriously i still have a copy for the PC sitting in my game shelf. I bust it out when i want to remember how awesome that game is.

Crash Bandicoot. The first one was the first game i dedicated a few hours to when i first got my PS1.

Final Fantasy 8. Screw 7. Its been done to death. It was a good game before the rabid fan base demanded HD Remakes and sequels. Cloud as a protagonist is annoying. He complains, fails to protect his client and then goes all RAWR on Sephiroth in a vain attempt to be a hero. 8 was awesome. Had a good story, memorable characters and the ending was beautiful.
