What Should I Play First?

I recently got a big computer upgrade - well, an entirely new computer, bar my DVD drive - which has taken me from previously only being able to play MindSweeper to being able to run Crysis in Very High mode. Now I'm like a kid in a candy store, but what the heck do I play first?

I really love RPGs (sorry, Yahtzee) especially turn-based JRPGs, I like games with a lot of character-customisation or strategy. I don't do well with stuff like Halo, because I can't see what I'm aiming at and get all distracted by yarn and mice and things.

I loved Fable, Baldur's Gate, and all the Final Fantasies up until IX. X was passable, XI was awful. I've tried WoW as well, but I'm looking for something offline. I also like Heroes of Might & Magic, and stuff like that.

So, knowing all this... anyone got suggestions?

Crysis. It will get all the graphics-orgy out so you can enjoy other games without thinking "I wonder if my computer can handle something even better looking..."

Either that or Mass Effect. It's not only a splendid game, but it's far better on the PC.

Mass Effect, Fallout Three, Crysis, they didn't really make any Jrpgs for pc did they, Witcher Enhanced edition (probably modded for european content would be nice). Neverwinter Nights 2, Jade Empire (MAYBE this is kind of a hit and miss game).

Thats all I can come up with off the top of my head.

Thank you! That at least gives me a list to look at :]

I've already got Crysis on my PC - I didn't play it, I just installed it to check that I could, glee - so I'll have a go at that, and then look at Mass Effect and the others. I've been thinking about Fallout Three, too, because I think it uses the same engine as Baldur's Gate?

I really loved Fable, but Fable 2 isn't out yet, and I was sad that getting more powerful makes your character older. I mean, when I can stop time and I have lightning hands the Emporeror would be envious of, I think I should be able to zap away my wrinkles.

Where on earth did you hear that?

It's a highly modified version of the Gamebyro engine used in Oblivion

I hate to do this, but I have to suggest Saints Row 2. You don't need to be a very good shot in SR2, since you're a tank and have wonderful non-weaponized ways of killing people.
Like cars, throwing, melee in general, allies, and ninjas.

Sandbox fun ftw!

You might be thinking of Fallout and Fallout 2? They run on an engine very similar to the Baldurs Gate (if not the same can't exactly remember) the same does Planescape: Torment.

RPGs, eh?
Here's my list of computer RPGs:
Baldur's Gate series (Oh, I see you already have that)
Neverwinter Nights series (mostly the first one, the second I found to be extremely meh)
Diablo II (The expansion is a must. I cannot stress that sentence enough)
Arcanum (A rather enjoyable steampunk game which I believe uses the Fallout engine)
Oblivion (It was wayyyyyyyy too big for me, I ended up drowning in it, but it is pretty darn enjoyable)

Those are the ones I've played. Here are those I haven't but have heard good things about:
Icewind Dale (apparently the same engine as Baldur's Gate)
KOTOR (Same as above, replace Baldur's gate with Neverwinter Nights)
Fallout (Same as above, replace Never... well actually Fallout came first)
Fallout 3 (blah blah... Oblivion)

Yes, I might have been. This was a while ago, probably before Fallout 3 was released, now that I think about it.

Is Saints Row 2 still fun if you DON'T try to murder and maim everyone? I kinda like being nice.

At the risk of sounding very stupid (MindSweeper, remember. I got really good at Solitaire) I always thought Neverwinter Nights was an MMO. I mean, I could - and probably am - be completely wrong, I never looked into it or anything, I just thought it was, for some reason. Am I confusing it with Everquest and Guild Wars?

I played Diablo II briefly somewhere, but didn't like it because everything was so small. I know that makes me sound like I'm 90, or something, but everything was really tiny! I like sprite games and all, but seriously.

Oh, I love those, too! I really loved ToonStruck, it's a shame it's so old it won't run on my computer anymore. And I enjoyed Broken Sword and Blazing Dragons back on the Sega Saturn.

I forgot all about Myst, I'll have to add those to my list.

Thank you guys so much! Keep 'em coming :3

Not even with dosbox? It's a DOS emulator that allows you to play old games. And if you want to play old Lucasarts point and click games, you should use ScummVM.

Ooh! I tried something, but I can't recall what it was, as I haven't tried to run it for a couple of years. My brother still has the original game disc, so I'll tell him to try it and see if either of those work. ToonStruck was the best.

I've never liked the Sims, the first time I played it I thought it was dull and stupid because they didn't speak English. But I have a lot of contempt for humanity, the only thing I'd play the Sims for is to make door-and-windowless room prisons and let them eat each other.

I believe it has an MMO option. Or something. I never actually played that.
But it has a fully-functional single player mode that is much much fun.

As for Diablo II, you can change the resolution to fix that if you want.

NwN is a game that you can play multiplayer but your just as well off doing single player stuff. The thing about NwN and it's sequel is that they both have VERY robust mod tools that people use to create their own modules and games and campaigns. If you're just going for the vanilla game, probably you're better off picking up the sequel as the Campaign is much better written in my opinion. NwN1 has alot of running around and moves at a snails pace. NwN2 is much faster paced than that and you can breeze through the single players prologue and first chapter in 1/10th the time of NwN1.

As to Baldurs Gate, the RPG series used what's known as the "infinite engine" which was also used in Planetscape Torment, Icewind Dale (good luck finding those) and I think a heavily modified version was used for the Fallout series. Currently the developers from Black Island have moved and are now Obsidian Entertainment (who made NwN2, it's expansions, Knights of the Old Republic 2, and are working on a Spy and Aliens RPGs). If you like Strategy games one suggestion I would have (this'll have you looking everywhere) is called Myth. This was a series primairly for the Mac's back in the day by of all people Bungie of halo fame. The basic concept is one that few have replicated, you start with a set amount of units these units will be the only ones you receive (usually) and will gain experience. It's fantastic fun and loosely based off the "Black Company" books by Glenn Cook. Also another one you might try would be Civilization IV, basic premise is you lead a tribe of people (you pick from historically powerful nations) from the stone age to the information age and dominate your opponents via military, culture, or other strengths. There isn't much management in the battles themselves, however this does force you to change your economy to support an offensive and such.
