What TV shows do the British and other Europeans watch? I speak of shows besides Doctor Who, Torchwood, Red Dwarf, Blackadder etc. I'm seeking out shows that are popular, but have yet to be introduced to America and spread like virus.

Peep Show, IT Crowd, The Inbetweeners and Not Going Out all all popular shows which have not made it to America, or at least as far as I know.

There's also a lot of popular panel shows like QI, Would I Lie to You? and Mock the Week which are very popular but probably won't ever make it to the US (think QI is an exception) because you need to be familiar with British (celeb) culture and politics to get them.

Have I got News for you is also brilliant, but again you really need to know British politics to appreciate it.

Ah, Peep Show and IT Crowd are brilliant :D

Besides what Nickolai has mentioned, we also have a lot of single-series (think 6-13 episodes for the length of our series) dramas that come out on ITV and BBC. They can actually be pretty good but they're almost uniformly depressing as fuck. They tend to draw a lot of viewers, but you aren't looking at a single franchise here. Normally when a series it's done, it's done and they just make a new one.

A disproportionate amount of them seem to be period dramas, too.

Whatever happened to Black Mirror? Is that still on? Or was that a two-season deal?

I saw a trailer a while back for a US remake of The Inbetweeners so that has made the journey across the pond at least. Here's the trailer
Never watched the US version so I've no idea how it compares though

OP:One of the most popular shows on Irish tv for the last few years has been a crime drama series called Love/Hate.It's pretty much the Irish equivalent of Breaking Bad from what I can see as in it's a gritty realistic drama centered around the drug trade and it's really popular with the public.I've never watched it though so I couldn't tell you if it's any good or not

6-13? Aren't half of every TV show made in the UK only 3-4 episodes long?

And most of them seem to be about grizzled old detectives who drink too much and need a shave.

The American version is just a dreadful rip off of the British version as demonstrated by the following clip

on topic: 8 out of 10 cats is pretty popular

I've heard Borgen is good political drama but haven't watched yet.
The Thick of It is a brilliant sweary version of Yes Minister.
Spaced is a great dysfunctional comedy, as is Black Books.
For black comedy go for League of Gentlemen.

Also QI, Have I Got News For You for panel shows.

There are a lot of detective and crime series on tv here (Belgium/Netherlands). You have some british ones like Endeavour and Midsomer Murders; there used to be some german ones Der Alte and Tatort but they seem to replaced by scandanivian series like Borgen, Wallander and The Killing.
Other shows, like panel shows are usually too specific to follow if you're not from the country it is made. But if you like panel show I would suggest QI, Never Mind The Buzzcocks and Shooting Stars.
And also try 'Ruddy Hell it's Harry and Paul', the funniest and most insightful sketch show.

I'm from the UK but i hate UK shows, our production values are so far below American shows and i hate our accents.

I like 24 and House but i'm currently working my way through Star Trek:TNG and then Cheers, i also love Mythbusters.

Im pretty much only watching Doctor Who at the moment. And the usual panel shows if they happen to be on and im eating something.

And there hasnt been any Torchwood since Miracle Day. And i doubt theres ever going to be any Torchwood ever again.

In Sweden, people watch... um...

I don't know, actually. I watch very little TV. In Sweden, we pretty much only watch American shows.

WOULD YOU START THE FANS PLEASE!

Oh that made my day!

OT: Only tv show I have any interest in watching is Supernatural... the one big US show that isn't shown on any UK channel!

All this stuff. The Inbetweeners hasn't been on for a few years, but they've made two films since then and they both smashed the box office. I think they were making a US adaption but it looked... less than stellar.

It always made me sad that Green Wing didn't get more love, I fucking loved that show. Oh, I don't know if America has gotten The Mighty Boosh, but it's pretty much the best show ever, as demonstrated by this clip:
At first I thought it was a sea anemone, but on closer inspection I realised it was a funky ball of tits from outer space.

There's Noel Fielding's Luxury Comedy as well, which is similar, but a bit more abstract and the second series has quite a bit of metahumour in it. It doesn't have the incredible music numbers that the Boosh did either, but it's still great.

I like "Fort Boyard".

EDIT: I also used to watch comedian groups like "Les Inconnus" and "Les Nuls".

Peep Show, Inbetweeners, IT Crowd as far as comedies go, but I don't know if the humour would translate. Can't think of any huge TV shows really. Everyone I know mainly just watches American TV shows online.

I'd mention Garth Marenghi's Dark Place, but I think I'm the only person to have actually watched the series.
