For the past few months, I've been getting emails from [email protected] and [email protected] stating that "strong evidence has been found to suggest that the account in question has been sold or traded".

This is in spite of the fact that the last Blizzard product I played was The Lost Vikings, and I'm therefore fairly certain that I don't even have an account to sell. I've recieved several warnings, regardless of my attempts to alert them to the slight problem that you can't sell an account that doesn't exist, and that if someone has created an account in my name, they should damn well delete the thing.

World of Warcraft - Cataclysm™ Alpha Test

You have been selected to participate in the alpha test of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm™. Welcome!

In the alpha test you'll get an opportunity to test the first changes of Azeroth, and the new levels above 80. We look forward to your feedback on the overall experience, including quests, monsters, zones, aesthetics, and more. We would also appreciate reports on any bugs you may encounter. These can be logged using the /bug command explained below.

Getting started:

In order to participate in the alpha test, you must upgrade an existing retail account that has been upgraded with Wrath of the Lich King, allowing you to connect to the Cataclysm™ test realms. The World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King game client that you use must be patched up to version 3.1.2 or later in order to install the alpha test client.

Go to http://alpha.worldofwarcraft.com [http://alpha.worldofwarcraft.com] and follow the detailed, step-by-step instructions to begin playing the World of Warcraft - Cataclysm Alpha.

Please be prepared to enter the current retail World of Warcraft account name and password you use, and the appropriate alpha code listed below to authenticate your eligibility to connect to the Cataclysm test realms. To participate in the beta tests, you must have a valid retail World of Warcraft account active and in good standing as of August 15, 2009.

Below is a beta code that will allow you to upgrade a World of Warcraft account to be eligible for the Cataclysm alpha test. Each alpha code can be used only once to upgrade an active retail World of Warcraft account.

134A - G43Y7 - 12HUA - L16QW

Please retain this email for your records. If you experience any issues setting up the alpha account or accessing the test realms, please email Billing Support at [email protected].

Sending us feedback:

Typing /bug in chat will open an error reporting interface, and we encourage you to use it any time you encounter a problem or want to send us a suggestion.
My first thought was that this is a really damn persistent phishing scam. A really impressive phishing scam that somehow has managed to make a bunch of mysteriously official-looking email addresses. Other problems involve the prospect of some laughable account filtering system, that considers someone strongly suspected of breaking the rules as viable candidates for some "alpha test", as well as the ever present issue of offering alpha tests to accounts that don't exist.

So, Escapirinos. Could anyone be so kind as to shed a little light on all this madness? Hell, are public "alpha tests" even a thing, for crying out loud? First I've heard of it.

Phishing. Cataclysm is nowhere near alpha.
Is what I'm thinking. What's the deal with the domain names, though? Is it really that easy to fake something like that?

Not to mention that Blizzard alphas are usually closed to the company and some friends.

I would censor your email on this board before someone decides to do some stuff with it.

Anyway, probably a phishing scam.

I doubt it's real, and does anyone know when new expansion is released?

My email address is in my profile for the world to see, so it's probably been messed with plenty already. No worries~

Blizzard let's out finished betas for limited testing, but their alphas for some games (admittedly, probably not WoW), go through so many changes before beta there's almost no way they would let out an alpha copy.

So you don't have a World of Warcraft account?

I would totally discount this as official then.

Actually, I would say it's an automated scam, if you don't have an account.
