That stereotype came about because the the Catholic church said it was unholy to profit from a loan. As jewish people tend NOT to be catholic, they had no such restrictions. (this was in Italy during the renaissance). The jewish ghettos quickly became the location for many banks (the word bank is a corruption of the italian word for bench, or vice versa). Bankers are rather frugal, so BAM! Stereotype.
