So, bands aren't allowed to evolve, to change their musical styles? You want them to just stay the same forever? Have you stayed the same forever? I know I haven't. If you don't like the new stuff, don't listen to it. Just stick to the old stuff and look for a new band to like, rather than whining about it.

Damn straight. If you always do what you always did, then you'll always get what you always got.
Read the changes I made to my OP, this isn't about bashing a band's decision and right to change their sound. it's about how their old sound that got them their initial recognition is thrown away and forgotten.

Both Sides of this argument are wrong.
Music is Subjective.
No one is right, no one is wrong, except when they fight...

Except for rap, that is just bad poetry ...Joking...

Give it a few years. Sometimes, a later album released by a band you used to like will get better over time. I feel that way very strongly about 'By the Way' by RHCP, 'American Idiot' by Green Day, 'A Crow Left of the Murder' by Incubus, and 'It Won't Be Soon Before Long' by Maroon 5. Audioslave's last album was also their best, I think.

That said, yeah, some bands peak early and its all downhill from there. Arguably, Incubus' greatest album was their second, Maroon 5 and Linkin Park both peaked early and went downhill, RHCP's last album was a disasterpiece, as was Green Day's. That's not even starting with... [browses through library] ... Arctic Monkeys, Blink 182, Korn (best song ever was the first track of their first album), No Doubt (their latter stuff is literally unbearable), Staind, Tegan and Sara (first 3 or 4 albums are fantastic, last 2 are trash), Zebrahead, and, of course, Weezer.

Oh yeah, and my favourite sell-out? Liz Phair.

Ummm... Pretentious, much?

OT: I can't be the only person who likes American Idiot, and Korns newer stuff?

Dream Theater suffered a tragic setback when their lead singer, James Labrie, got food poisoning and vomited so hard he hurt his vocal cords. Although they eventually got better, the albums he made during the time his voice was reduced were not as good range-wise as they could have been had he skipped the shrimp.

Another thing is sometimes a band's style just changes, along with their production values, which when combined sometimes make a band sound like they have a totally different style, case in point, The Black Dahlia Murder:

2003

2009
[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2qPN8ZN7U8]

They also changed drummers, although their newer one, Shannon Lucas, may be one of the best on the scene right now.

EDIT: I fail at posting videos on here, so the links will have to do.

It happens. Bands(their members) get older and mature. Their music matures with them. They have experiences that change them. Their music changes with them. It sucks to see it happen, but all you can do is keep listening to the albums/songs you enjoy.

I think alot of them lose their "hunger" once they've hit it big. They reached their goal, so theres no point in proving themselves anymore.

People (bands) change, change is an inevitable part of life. This is why I'm not a dedicated fan of any particular band, because at some point I'm not going to like the change and I won't be as disappointed like most people are. Complaining about it isn't going to help or change things either, it just gets annoying.

The only band I can think of is Metallica
Anything after the Black Album isn't my favorite(not saying I DON'T like any song at all off of Load or ReLoad, there were a couple. But St. Anger...)
I'm just glad Death Magnetic is closer to the old Metallica than the previous albums.

Green Day.
Dookie was such a great album, and then what? Then they try to act all political with American Idiot, and release the most blatant musical political marketing tripe I've ever seen. You're not a political band, Green day. You're not even punk. You were a 'fun' band who tried to go serious, and you suck now.
I happen to still enjoy them. And seeing as Dookie was only marginally less successful then American Idiot I fail to see where the mainstream market whore-dom people keep ranting about is.

OT: I'm really tired of all this "Oh, they're selling out, oh they're becoming MAINSTREAM." thing that people won't shut up about. Its only a step down from being a hipster. For example I'll use the example that keeps getting thrown in my face at the moment. Muse. I for one love Hullabaloo, Showbiz and Origin Of Symmetry. And yet I also love Absolution, Black Holes and Revelations and The Resistance. But I'm in the minority. Most people either only buy into the last 2 or 3, or the first 3. And thats fine but I hate the way they act towards each other. The old fans bitching about how they've "sold out" or "gone mainstream" and the new fans generally being oblivious that the band existed before twilight.
While there are definitely cases of bands selling out, I think that the number of cases is supremely over-rated. Alot of the time I think it's just the direction in which the band evolves which is different to the way the old-school fans wanted the band to go. But for gods sake, just stop listening to them, don't ***** about them to anyone who comes in contact with you.
And for the people about to rage at me for mentioning Muse, there are 1000 other examples I could have used, that was just the first one that came to mind.

Well said. I still love Green Day, and while their sound has changed that core of energy that they throw into their songs never has.

It's all in your point of view, I suppose.

Interesting side note: The same stuff was said about Dookie (Green Day sold out, yadda yadda).

I just don't think the album was that good, and the title track was an atrocity against humankind.

And also? Green Day in a Madden game. If that's not mainstream whore-dom...

I haven't heard that first song. It must have been some of their really early stuff. To be fair, the whole Sense of Purpose Album is really good even though it doesn't even hold a candle to Come Clarity.

Regardless of the first two songs, those last two are just what I feared. Every time a band releases a new album I get the fear that it's going to be sell out trash. I used to somewhat like Trivium until that pile of dead babies that was the Crusade. Atreyu did the same; The Curse is one of my all time favourite albums but after that it just crashed into a pile of mediocrity and FAILURE! The most recent band to betray me in this way if I recall are KSE but there are plenty others.

It seems to be happening more and more these days and now I fear that InFlames have fallen into the trap. Some people call it the changing face of music but I call it the end of the world. When Zeppelin, the Beetles, Deep Purple etc, were rockin' about, now that was the changing face of music.

My taste in music has changed dramatically over the past two years after the endless betrayal by my favorite bands I've had to go find new ones. I've moved into a lot prog, psychedelia and more mellow stuff all around, although I do enjoy some really good heavy stuff. I will still have to check out their new album in case this is some kind of elaborate hoax but I knew this was going to happen. Given their sound on Soundtrack to your Escape and Clayman compared with Come Clarity and then a Sense of Purpose, it was only a matter of time....

It would appear that the only bands making decent music these days are Porcupine Tree, Dream Theatre, Wolfmother (my god, seriously, Cosmic Egg is like the best album ever) and My Morning Jacket (Thank you American Dad)

So you're telling me that if someone came up to you and offered to pay you alot of money to use your song in a game which you have to do no work for, you'd decline?

Absolutely not. I have no qualms about people making as much money as they can for their work.

I don't consider "mainstream whore-dom" to be a bad thing by any stretch of the imagination.
