What the hell is "30 Rock"

I've tried watching this show twice now, never a complete episode, and have not been able to figure out what the shit it's supposed to be about. It never explains itself, I'm never able to figure out what was going on.
Some shows are often described as being "unable" to hop in the middle of the series, people tell you to watch from the beginning. But even THOSE shows explain itself during. 30 Rock never seems to for me.

Some of the jokes are kind of funny but I lack all the context, which is never introduced. Who's the chick? (I swear no one was ever mentioned by name with the exception of "Tracy Jordan", and only because there was a hugeass sign behind him) Why is her boss considered some kind of "go to" guy for advice? Where do they work? I heard mention of a "business" and nothing else. What the fuck is Tracy Morgan doing? Why is he there? Where the hell are they, even?
None of this is ever explained during the two excerpts I've seen (about thirty minutes worth) during two to three episodes.

And yet the show is apparently a big deal. I just need some explanation.

It's about what goes on at a television studio and the personal lives of people who work there.

It's also a great show.

American comedy TV show about the behind the scenes of a Tv set.

All this I knew. Except the TV set part. That helps a little.

Perhaps it was because I started watching on the 'right' episode, but I understood almost everything about it from the first time I watched. Just keep watching it, it'll become clear. I enjoy it, I hope you will enjoy it...in fact, let's all enjoy it. Let's gather all walks of life on this site, gather them in a very large room in front of a 13", black-and-white tv with terrible reception (it's going to have the 'bunny ear' antennas), we can all pitch in for refreshments, and we'll have a jolly ol' time while we all partake in a 30 Rock marathon in the dark.

a writer for a tv show (tina fey), and her self entitled actor, jenna. NBC's executive, jack donoghy, (can't spell his name) hires tracy jordan to increase their ratings, and then shit happens. It's also one of the best shows i've seen, and i'm going to be watching it later tonight.

I feel the same way about Parks and Recreation, The Office etc.

This new style of comedy doesn't really hit well with me....

I don't understand the hype

Google is a fascinating yet apparently elusive tool. In my opinion it's a pretty damn hilarious tv show, that's worth watching from the beginning. I don't think it's too hard to grasp the basic concept. Though watching a complete episode might help...

The show has become less and less about what it's about. Recently you can get through an entire episode without a mention of the show they work (TGS with Tracey Jordan) the company they work for (NBC) or, well, anything involved int he premise really. If anything that should make it more accessible, though, since all you need to know is the character dynamics which you can learn immediately in one scene of each character. I think you're just putting too much importance on that stuff.

I can never get into the "old" style of comedy. I love shows like this, Parks, Community, and The Office (Although it sucks now).
