I'd like to just say 'anything by Nobuo Uematsu' and be on my way, but specifically, Final Fantasy 8 would top it. It'd be a bit difficult to claim anything else when this piece of music [http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=fgXTO7fQAHo] has been my ringtone in one form or another for eight years solid.

Guilty gear without a doubt, if you aint heard it you are missing out.
My personal favourites would be unholy orders (the ky theme) and writhe in pain (milia rage theme) they are truly superb!
Not to forget the awe of she (dizzy's theme), absolutely mind blowning jap shred!

My personal faves:

1. Albert Odyssey
2. Panzer Dragoon Saga
3. Legacy of the Wizard
4. Sonic 2
5. Chrono Trigger

Interestingly, no game from this gen (with the exception of Mass Effect, and Prince of Persia) has had a memorable soundtrack for me. I wouldn't even call DMC 3/IV, SotC, Dead Space, or FFVIII's soundtrack good.

To each his own I suppose.

Honourable mention to Zelda Ocarina of Time, especially the orchestrated version that was released.

Final Fantasy is also one of my favourites, possibly VIII or X being my favourite.
The Piano arrangements of the songs are divine but my favourite versions are the full orchestrated versions (such as the 20020220 album or the DVD called 'Voices').

I might get some funny looks for this but Dr Robotnik's mean bean machine has always had one of my favourite 16 bit soundtracks- I mean how can you not like this?

My top three sound tracks are:

3- Doom/Doom 2/Final Doom, all of which have great music that matchs the gameplay and action.

2- Alone in the Dark: the new nightmare, the music in this game created the dark, oppressive and nightarish environment I was promised.

1- Red Alert 2, Grinder/Hell March 2/Drokk...need I say more?

Oblivion's, mostly because every time I hear it I remember all those months I spent playing that game.

to give a short answer.... i like the soundtracks for sandbox games (such as GTA, Saints Row) in which you can get a variety of songs... i like all music except for rap and heavy metal... so usually most things are fine..

P.S. out of all the GTA's i liked vice city's the best

The Zelda series is full of songs that stick in your head for days on end. Some of my favorite include Hyrule Field, Main Theme to Twilight Princess, The Great Sea, The Dark World, Temple of Time, and...um...that really sad song that plays in a specific part in Twilight Princess.

Midna's Lament

Other games with great original soundtracks include Shadow of the Colossus, God of War, Okami, and Secret of Mana. Games with good licensed soundtracks include GTA: San Andreas, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, and Rock Band.

Well Halo 1-3 is probably my favorite game OST (especially #3)
mass effect is good to but it's not quite as good when your listening to it on your MP3 player.
mirrors edge is definitely my #2 after halo, and strangely enough too human also has one helluva soundtrack! despite it being a crappy game -_-
hell march is very nice but it's also the only RA track i like.

I probably missed a shitload of good ones :p

Duck Tales. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_80PQ543rM&feature=related]

Oh, and Homeworld [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vt-U3etIpMQ&feature=related] has one of the most atmospheric soundtracks out there.

My vote goes to Halo 1-3, well composed, very epic, very iconic and very cinematic. Suits the game brilliantly and is considerably more memorable than some other ones mentioned.

It also isn't as Ham Handed as Metal Gears Soundtrack sometimes gets.
