So, to anyone familiar with vocal ranges and their details, what is this guy singing in for this song?

I'm thinking maybe Tenor? I, I honestly don't know what it would be, but it's right around the range that I can comfortably hit these days with my vocal cords, and I'm curious what that's actually called.

Just been bugging me as I've been singing along with it, and realizing I'm hitting it comfortably and without cracking. Which hasn't happened for a while, because most of the music I enjoy, the vocal range is MUCH higher, and I just can't hit that shit anymore. Curse you Geddy Lee and your high range! *shakes angry fist*

He's a little too on the deep end for a tenor. Low tenor maybe, but I'd say he's more of a light baritone.

What about when he's doing the chorus parts? That's where he seems to get the highest vocally.
Not an expert by any means, but that still sounds within the range of a baritone voice. His highest notes in that chorus aren't all that high.

Being a bass/baritone doesn't exclude someone from singing higher/lower notes. Any singer with training or just pure practice can sing at least 2 octaves, but which "voice" they are is more or less determined by which range of notes they can sing most comfortably and with the richest, most pleasing quality.

Also, that band sounds like it'd be my jam, so gonna give that a further listen.

Yeah I was just curious what he would qualify as, so I could at least know what my new "range" is roughly. Since you specified "can sing most comfortably" that's pretty much what drew me to it, as that's exactly the definition I use for it.

Glad to introduce you to them! They are the band that does...well pretty much all of the in-world music for Remedy games, the Max Payne, Alan Wake, Control company. As I recall, one of the developers at Remedy has been long time friends with members of the band, and has tapped them for most if not all of their music for their games. So much so, that they've kind of got an in-universe band equivalent for Poets of the Fall. Called Old Gods of Asgard, which is referenced multiple times in the Remedy games. They've got some cool tunes, hope you enjoy them. The songs they did for Control were really damn fun.

Oh, that's the same people? Well, I'm afraid you just made me remember the stage battle. For all of Alan Wake's flaws, that sequence is the coolest and hypest shit.

As a note, there is a similar kind of thing in Control to Alan Wake. Similar to the stage battle I mean. If you like Remedy's stuff, and haven't checked out Control, I'd suggest it. Really enjoy that game, and the "like the Alan Wake stage scene but.." moment was just pure joy for me personally.

Tenor.

It's possible he had classical training. They (classical trained tenors, that is) tend to have the widest range. As a chorister, I was a tenor, but able to sub for both altos (if the parts weren't too taxing, but only up until my mid-teens) and baritones, but this was more due to my voice breaking really slowly than anything else, though the training helped. Professional oratorial tenors have an insane singing range (they can comfortably sing across three octaves without changing tonality and have a really wide falsetto transition range), and counter-tenors are capable of even more insane singing ranges if their voices broke the 'right way' (i.e. late and incrementally).

And damn, haven't heard Poets of the Fall in a long time. Probably gonna go binge now. -.-

EDIT - listening back, I'm fairly certain he's a tenor as he never uses a falsetto voice. Though the range within the song isn't that wide (sounds like an octave and a half-ish, though could be wrong, wouldn't surprise me), it is on the high side for a baritone to be able to sing without going falsetto.

Found it, an instance of Marko going full on falsetto (how high he goes is possible for baritones, but really difficult and they'd struggle to hold it for the length of that chorus, further, the lower pitched parts of the chorus he can sing in a non-falsetto voice so I think the sustained falsetto is an artistic choice he's just capable of carrying out):

Also, I know it'd be subject to post-production, but still, his pitch aim during the chorus is impressive.

EDIT - again...

Cool to the first and LOL, shows what I know, to the second! XD
