Ever hear a lot of bad things about a game, you go out and buy/rent it, and you find out that said part was one of the best parts or not even that bad. Has anyone ever had any moments like that?

I've noticed this with a lot of fighting games, and people for some reason not liking that they have to unlocking some characters. Or recently, people not liking DMC4 because of Nero, who is basic described as a "whiny emo" etc etc...when he really isn't and most of the moments where he does show emotion, it is fully justified.

About a year ago, I rented Shadow the Hedgehog out of curiosity. After hearing so many bad things, I was expecting pure crap. But as it turns out, that game isn't really as bad as it was made out to be. The controls (One of the most common complaints) felt perfectly fine to me, and the level design was pretty good for the most part. It also turns out that the guns and vehicles are pretty much optional, with exceptions.

But the game still has a buttload of problems, meaning I still wouldn't call it a great game by any means. But I don't think it's anywhere near as terrible as everyone says.

Brutal Legend. Tons of complaints about the RTS parts being lame and out of place. I thought it broke up the game nicely. I would get bored if it was just a huge open world game, or even if it was a God of War clone. The variety was good, and fit in with the story. I wouldn't buy the game for the RTS parts alone, but as a whole it was a fun game even with multiple play-throughs.

I dunno man, when I played it I didn't even get to finish the first level the very first time I attempted it because I fell through the ground so many times I got a game over. Literally, just fell right through the stage continually. I wasn't even jumping, just running. The game deserves its reputation (but it's a hilarious gag gift).
Really!? I can't say that ever happened to me. Ever. Though I do recall that happening to me in Heroes a few times.

Lots of complaints about Just Cause (The first one). I got it for free with my Xbox 360. I liked it, it was enjoyable. Moreso than GTA IV anyways.

Also, I played some game called Wreckless: The Yakuza Missions once. I don't even remember the gameplay, except some cheat that turned you into a chef that can steal cars. But I remember it being fun. At least as a kid. Yeah, forget that example.

I saw a PS2 game called "Sky odyssey" preowned for £3; which is a lot less then some old Disney or Fifa game !! The box looked interesting and it wasnt the same old flight sim crap so i got it.
Omg this game is ace! Sure...you dont actually shoot anything but basic flight around and through obsticles is great! Flying through a tight cave, avoiding stalagmites and stalactites is quite rewarding.

Most of the games everyone hates here are actually quite popular. Mirror's Edge, Brutal Legend, yes, even MW2! And they're popular for a reason.

As it is, I'll go with Turning Point: Fall of Liberty. I passed on getting this game for years, despite a plot that really intrigued me, because everyone kept saying how bad it was. Eventually I got it for the PS3 for 3 bucks, and wouldn't you know it, I really liked it. It's not without flaws, but it's certainly not the most horrendous game ever made, as some people were saying.

Experienced it with Deus Ex: Invisible War, which I actually played before the original Deus Ex (blasphemous, I know). It was actually pretty good aside from some graphical performance issues, being much much much shorter, lacking skills in any way and the universal ammo (whomever came up with that was on somethin', I'm sure....).

Certainly gave me incentive to pick up it's (superior) predecessor.

mirror's edge and deus ex: invisible war were like this; Games I truly enjoy and love that so many people said were crap.

and with the latter I preferred it to the original Deus Ex, which I played long after.

just goes to show that different people have different opinions. who'da thunk it?!
