Super Mario bros on the NES was the first game i ever played, that and Duck Hunt. The game that really started it all for me was Pokemon Red though. I think I spent half my childhood playing that game.

Maniac Mansion for the NES. Oh the strategic mental stimulation. Oh the macabre humor. It was too much for my 6 year old brain to process, but I could never return to the world of having a standard issue young-mans sporting goods centralized youth again.

Amen. I'll never forget not understanding that game even a little bit and yet still being completely incapable of not playing it for longer periods than 8 seconds at a time.

Sonic 2. Any game after that I'd go at it thinking "Will this be better than Sonic?". That soon developed into "Will this be better than Crash Bandicoot?"
That's actually continued through my gaming life. At the mo', it's "Will this be better than Team Fortress 2". Thanks to this, I'm pretty rough on games nowadays.

Those are actually the clearest memory I have of James Pond, because it was one of the first videogames to introduce how mindlessly entertaining it is simply to watch something you manipulate defy gravity beyond all reason.

In my early years, I was only as enthusiastic about videogames as any other kid was. I started with the SNES and Gameboy, graduated to Playstation...with a few other endeavors along the way (Virtual Boy, Sega Saturn, Sega Gamegear...I actually enjoyed most of them, but I didn't own them for very long. I'm not sure why. And yes, I did enjoy the Virtual Boy in my youth...even though it was only because I had the tremendously awesome Wario Land). For the most part, I just played games that were popular...or just any game my parents thought I'd like. Mostly things like Mario, Donkey Kong Country, or sports games. There WERE a few games I went out of my way for, like Wario Land, Pokemon, Crash Bandicoot, and Monster Rancher...but I didn't REALLY get into gaming until a fateful rental...

Chrono Cross. <3 God, I love Chrono Cross. I just saw it in a cheap rental place one day and thought it looked nice, so I took it home for a weekend...and it BLEW MY TINY LITTLE MIND! It was just so different than any other game I'd played! The narrative was so much richer...and there was such an emphasis on plot and dialogue and intrigue. I was a total booknerd by the time I was in 6th grade, so to me...Chrono Cross was like two of my favorite things coming together. Right after taking CC back to the rental store, I begged my parents to let me go buy it. Shortly after, I also got Final Fantasy Chronicles, Vagrant Story, and Suikoden II. Since then, I've paid more attention to games. I mostly played J-RPGs for a LONG while, and while they still take a huge chunk out of my casual time, I eventually branched out and started seeking games of different genres.

If it wasn't for Chrono Cross, I don't think I'd love games as much as I do now. God forbid the thought, but I COULD be a football fan right now. >.>
