What was the last movie that actually scared you?

I was wondering why new horror movies seem less scary.
For instance i remember my parents telling me about a person who went to see the movie The Birds and had a heart attack, nowadays you see people walk out of Saw talking about what to order for dinner.

My point is when did movies become less scary and what was the last one that actually made you have trouble sleeping?

I guess Saw is not scary because it is so over-the-top that you never come to think "oh my god if that happens to me..." . For me, this is what makes a movie scary, being able to identify with the characters and their fears. Many of these modern movies concentrate more on gore than on suspense, and in my opinion that´s what makes them less scary. I am thinking about Saw, The Hills have Eyes, Wrong Turn, Cabin Fever...

The last movie that scared me? Watching REC alone at night scared me quite a bit, especially the last ten minutes. A movie that completely disturbed me, instead of only scaring me, was Funny Games. I saw the original some years ago, but the remake is said to be very close to it anyway.

I've never been scared by a movie, Saw, Birds or otherwose. The Shinning and John Carpenters The Thing were great for some horrific moments. As for modern cinema I would recomend The Mist as another good one.

It's been so long, I've almost forgotten.

I think it was a Shirley Temple movie. Scared the crap out of me, what with all the dancing and creepiness and smiles...

28 Days Later.

It scared me because it was shot in England so I recognised lots of the locations & also the story line is very credible.

The only the fictional device in the film is the virus itself & it's effects, the rest is pretty much what would happen is a virus like that escaped. Scary stuff.

Sidenote, Michael Meyers is the truely frightening "Horror Killer". Both Jason and Freddy are undead, thus total BS. Pumpkinhead and the Leprechaun are mythical bullshit. Alien is possiblye, but improbable, and as frightening as Scream was at times, a bag over Courteney Cox's face takes all the horror out of the film. But Michael, Michael Meyers is a normal (albeit strong) human, who's only super-power is how fucking apeshit psychotic he is. HE'S possible, the rest are BS.
yeah but if you watch those movies it just gets stupid
Random chick " Run over him with you Hummer, quickly!'
Random guy " did i get him with my two ton car?"
Randmo chick " Yes but he's gone..."

yeah believable, i wish i could take half the punishment he did in those movies, like superman but unable to fly

Right, he is human considering his backstory, but for the sake of the movie he is nearly as invincible as Jason. In the Rob Zombie Halloween, he gets shot several times and it has nearly no effect.

The last time I was really, really scared, was a long time ago, when I watched a danish movie (subsequently remade in america with horrible result) called "night-watch" about a guy who takes a job in a morgue where victims of murder and raped are placed until they get buried. It sounds pretty straight-forward, but when the plot starts to unravel, and the dead hookers start "wandering" around, this movie just freaked me out. I haven't watched it again, even though it's years since I saw it. I actually tried at one point where they showed it on television, but about 20 minutes into the movie, I realized that I didn't have the nerves to go through it ;)

I don't watch many horror movies but I completly agree with Khell Sennet, shock is just plain over used. At the same time though if used in cogunction to supense it can make a great moment. Ghostbusters is the movie that springs to mind for me watched that when i was four years old, the bit with the libarian, lol.

I think 28 Days Later was such a good film because it was so grounded in reality. Apart from the virus. And it definately earns points for a couple of pretty original things. Like having 'zombies' which can run, fast. And for putting some stuff happening in the middle of the DAY. If the main villain/creature/whatever-the-hell-is-supposed-to-scare-you can be threatening or frightening in broad daylight, then you have something.
Maybe those points have been done before, but they seemed to give the film an edge over others.
The theory made in the thread over shock vs. suspense...yep, that's pretty much it. It's why people don't get frightened by really sick stuff anymore: they've seen it before. Desensitised, or something. It's why the first bits of Cloverfield, where you don't really see the monster, are better (as well as the bit in the tunnel, that's pretty good). Although I must admit, I was more curious than scared about the monster after about 20 mins of NY getting destroyed.

I occasionally visit 4chan.org and as such have been stripped of any and all human emotion. Joking, however, probably Silent Hill, that little girl, that weird thing with no arms and head that spat acid, those derranged freaking nurses! Hells no.

The Shining's been the only film that's actually scared me, and I watched that about 4 years ago. Most horrors today seem more like action films, or slashers (which dont scare me). Although I do often have trouble going to sleep after watching them, just irrational fear.

Oddly.... The Bank Job, I didn't expect it to be as dark as it was and I was truly afriad for the characters. It did a very good job of raising tension.
