the amount of jrpgs makes me sad. actually it makes me sad that there arent more forgotten realms rpgs on here, in general. most modern rpgs are kinda lame. i had high hopes for dragon age: origins because i had heard it was supposed to be a spiritual successor to the baldurs gate series, but the game let me down in almost every conceivable way (though this has been true of every bioware games ive played, though ive never played any of the mass effect games). i havent gotten around to playing the witcher 2 yet but as far as modern rpgs go, the witcher was probably my favorite. i also loved demon's souls but despite the fact that i created a character and leveled up, i did not feel like i was role playing. to me it felt like an action game.

my favorite rpgs of all time are baldurs gate 1 and 2, and fallout 1 and 2 (NOT fallout 3, the fallout i know and love isnt a first person shooter)

My favorite RPG is also my favorite game, which is Tales of Symphonia. The entire game was just incredible for me. I loved the characters, the world, the combat, everything.

Second place goes to Golden Sun, without a doubt.

JRPG: Most of the FF series probably led with 7 8 and 10.

Western RPG: Elder Scrolls and Fallout Series.

Honorable Mentions: Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger. Also Lufia 2 The Fortress of Doom and Super Mario RPG for being my first RPG

Favorite RPG? I can give you a list of 5:

Planescape: Torment
Spirit Engine 2
Tales of Symphonia
Morrowind

The last one's tricky. I'm tempted to say Witcher 2. I'll wait for A) the patches to come in, and B) the hype to die down before I say for sure this is on my list. If not, Deus Ex. I also may have to make room for Deus Ex 3 when it comes out.
The patches are already coming. They've got a hairdresser,a few new quests and merchants and best of all the responsiveness on the game is improved meaning combat should be better.

I don't really understand JRPGs...I've played a few Final Fantasy titles to see what the hype is about and a few other random ones that have come out through the years but I really can't get into them.Seems like they took everything boring of the PnP system, simplified it and made it all flashy. This is not a demeaning comment to fans just some personal opinion.

As for my faves:
Arcanum(damn awesome)
Fallout NV(really better than F3 don't go saying different and bugs are a character building experience)
The Witcher 2(exceptional game with a real choice system)
Baldurs Gate 2(story + gameplay well handled)
Planescape:Torment(for that jaw dropping effect you experienced in Bioshock)

Fallout, Fallout 2, Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Secret of Mana, Star Ocean, and Mass Effect.

Those are my favorites in no particular order... I would suggest trying any that you haven't played, as they are all spectacularly awesome games in their own ways.

Final Fantasy IX for sure. After playing VII and VIII, it was nice to go back to the old school formula that made up the Final Fantasy of yesteryear. It also helped that IX had some of my favorite characters of the entire series, an amazing score and a story that still manages to invoke powerful emotions from me, even though I know the ins and outs of every aspect of it.

In my opinion, what counts as a RPG is subjective, not objective. If you feel like you are the character that you are controlling, that you are in their role, then subjectively, that game is an RPG for you. Though to call a game an RPG objectively, I'd say you need to be able to choose what to do, what to say, and the choice you make makes a significant impact on the game. By significant, I mean something from changing the ending, to changing what factions like you, to shooting a guy so you can loot his cowboy hat.

OT: WRPG, I'd say oblivion, though i haven't played many RPGs really, ME, ME2 and Dragon age I'm getting when my exams end. oblivion has many flaws, but the music still doesn't get old even playing for so many dozens of hours, its aesthetically pleasing, and I can make my own back-story and choose how to forge my path, and the combat isn't great, but its not bad either and is good enough not to break immersion. despite all its bugs and levelling system problems and oblivion gates, no other game has kept me immersed as well as oblivion, and that what counts over all for me for an RPG.

JRPG, I would say Mother 3. Because i distinctively dislike turn based games, thus most JRPGs. but mother 3 was funny, had a good story, had lovely music, and the way you could combo to the music was awesome, too bad emulators make this hard. and I'm too terrible a gamer to play mother 2. FFX though would be a close runner up. it is the only Turn based game I like, I think it is perfect combat wise. It's tactical and fun. but as aforementioned, I'm terrible at games and got stuck.

When it comes to JRPGs, the only ones I've ever beaten are Chrono Trigger and Persona 3. Although I'm awfully close to finishing FFVI and P4, and those are also really good. CT and P3 are about tied for my favorite games altogether.

As for western RPGs, the only ones I've beaten are KOTOR, Dragon Age: Origins, and Jade Empire, and I'm going to have to say Jade empire is my favorite of those for having a fairly unique aesthetic and setting along with one of the best plot twists ever.

Persona 4, Shadow hearts 1-3, and kingdom hearts 1-2. All brought something new to the table that was just amazing

I am a TES whore, and while I wanted to say Oblivion... Morrowind is still the better game. I could have discovered the cure for cancer if I spent the hours I was playing that on health research.

I consider the System Shock series true RPGs, due to the flexibility the game provides and the engrossing story. I would kill babies for a remake of SS2 with today's game engines.

The Fallout series also ranks high on my list (is my Bethesda tattoo showing?). Fallout 1 is still probably the best post-apocalyptic game thus far.

Finally, the SSI AD&D series provided me many hours of entertainment. Shame I cannot bear the clunky interface nowadays.

Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn is really good. I love it so much, best RPG ever, well sorta of.

Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 is th best RPG system of all time, at least in my view. Yes there are imba's but over all its so comprehensive and fun. The down side playing table top RPG is really nerdy, or so im told.

Hands down, it's Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn. It's the game I've spent the most time playing; at least one playthrough a year since I first bought it.

Fallout, hands down. Not too much zaniness, I love the combat, setting, and writing. Genuinely my favourite game eva!

Honourable mentions in no particular order:
Fallout 2 (dumb at times but plays like a dreeeeam)
New Vegas (one of the two RPGs that I played through even though I hated mixing RPG elements and shooter combat - I hated Fallout 3 as well, which is why I was so surprised that I enjoyed it so much.)
Vampire the Masquerade - Bloodlines (the other)
Arcanum (hated the combat, but loved everything else)
Planescape: Torment (again, hated the combat)
Final Fantasy VII - not wanting to get into the W/J RPG debate, but this was the first game I played that had a turn based combat system, and I was fascinated by being shown my characters' stats, and playing a game where the main focus wasn't just to jump on things, or murder as many things as I could, or whatnot. I tried playing it again recently, and now that I'm not 14 any more, I thought the dialogue was lame (that could be blamed on the translation), the story in general was boring (which can't really be blamed on the translation), aside from bosses you could murder just about anything by holding down circle, and there's pretty much no replay value unless you want to see what happens when Cloud dates everyone he can, because the story is the same every time. I don't play many JRPGs any more, but I'd be a pretentious bell-end if I didn't admit that I loved that game the first time I played it.

On the "silly definitions of RPG" thing, I was talking to a friend years ago on MSN, and we ended up talking about the first Resident Evil, which I only played in about 2002 because I was a coward as a teenager. I still remember him saying that it was one of his favourite RPGs on the Playstation. I said "I wouldn't really call it an RPG," to which he responded "Of course it is. An RPG is a game that tells a STORY."

We went for a pint a few weeks ago, and we were talking about another game that I missed out on and only played recently (Super Metroid), and he said that it and Link's Awakening were his favourite RPGs for the SNES. I genuinely thought I was being trolled. Don't get me wrong - great games, but not RPGs.

My is Golden Sun. It had amazing graphic for its time on the GBA, the plot is no where near complicated compare to some JRPG, the combat were great (I love the summons) and best of all I can saved anywhere I want unlike some other game placing them near boss fight etc.

My favorite RPG would be Legend of Legaia for the good old PS1. It came out when I was at an extremely impressionable age, and I imprinted to it like a freshly-hatched baby duck. I think the graphics hold up nicely to this day, and I really like the story. Plus, unlike so many RPGs these days, there were only three main characters, which meant they each got plenty of development and time in the spotlight. I hate how in games like Mass Effect or Final Fantasty, etc. etc., you can only bring along a handful of your teammates (that's why FFX is perhaps my favorite Final Fantasy, since you can switch out teammates in the middle of a battle). In Legend of Legaia, that was never an issue.

Every few years I come back and replay it. I've done everything there is to do in the game, save level everyone to 99 and unlock the secret Juggernaut spell.

Runners up include Mass Effect, FF VII and X, and Shining Force 2.
