The ghost in the shell movie. I remember rewinding the parts with Motoko in the invisi-suit over and over. It was either that or Armitage III where there was actually straight up human on cyborg-loli boot-knocking.

Mine was also Elfen Lied. Remains as one of my favourite anime to this day.
Gotta love excessive gore. Plus the story was beautiful.

I don't watch anime. I loathe it.

Also, I couldn't have been the only person who immediately thought of disturbing hentai when I saw the words "mature anime."
Just curious: Why even pipe in with a comment? I mean I had a few doubts about the title of the thread, but I thought I'd give it a shot.
I was wondering if anyone else thought the same thing when they saw "mature anime." It just made me laugh.

The first Vampire Hunter D Movie, I don't remember it being all that good, but I may have been too young to understand it at the time.

I saw the second movie sometime later, and I remember it as being much better.

I suppose one would have to think of what "mature anime" means in this context.
If it means, "What was the first anime with tits, gore and violence you ever saw?", then it's Akira.
If you mean, "What was the first anime that made you feel like you're watching something with adult content in it?", that would probably be Gundam Wing. (Yeah, I know it's sort of laughable with it being on Toonami a decade ago and all but with all that political intrigue and philosophizing over the nature of what it means to be a soldier, I think it counts)

Like many posters before I'll be reserved about what "mature" means, but first anime I ever saw was Hellsing, courtesy of a friend of mine who introduced me to the whole genre, so I guess that counts.

Darknight910 makes a very good point, going by the "first anime that made you feel like you're watching something with adult content in it?" definition of mature I would also say either "Gundam Wing", or "Gundam 08th MS team" and, or "Outlaw Star".

That depends on the definition of mature. the first anime I saw when I began watching lots of anime at the beginning of summer last year was "Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan" Gore and sexual humor galore but not very mature plot wise, otherwise it would be "Elfen Lied" which I watched some weeks later, or "Death Note" which I watched a few years ago.

Tenchi Muyo.

I have fond memories of that show on Toonanmi, as well as a lifelong crush on Ryoko <3

Deathnote. Dark, morally complicated, and disturbing, this was my first anime for grown-ups.

I saw a hentai before i saw jsut a mature anime... o_O that f'd me up a bit.

But i'd have to say... berserk otherwise. It still makes me sick to my stomach just thinking about the ending of the anime.

Well, It would have been the Lupin III film The Secret of Mamo.
First anime I ever saw. Damn good. Got me a taste for anime which was never cured.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, and I know it isnt really mature Anime but screw that the Super Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann would rip a hole in the dimensions big enough to make it count.

I only watched That and Haruhi though so yeah. not that big into anime.
