First off apologies about the coining of an angry video game nerd catchphrase but its honestly what I thought when playing this game.
Some of you may know but most probably wont that I am a pretty big Soul Calibur fan going right back to Soul Blade/Edge and I have enjoyed all of them to a greater or lesser extent (ok didnt play the ios one, SC legends on Wii or the PSP one).
Now I wasnt particularly enamoured with the idea of lost Swords I mean a single player fighting game that literally makes no sense and immediately kills (at least for me) any impetus to get better but being a fan and it being free I decided to give it a go anyway and I have to say its one of the worst games I have had the unfortunate luck to play.
The first few days most people myself included could not even play it so not a good first impression. Next you get on and you notice something the load times are absolutely horrendous you dont want to do anything because each press of the button will have the game loading for 10 seconds or up and thats if you dont get kicked back to the title screen from an error (gotta love these single player always online games).
Now Soul Calibur has usually had good single player experiences (except 5 which had awful single player and great multiplayer) so I was surprised that this game didnt maybe it changes it up later but I doubt it instead of a miriad of challenges like in the old games you just get survival ones with the possibility of unlocking other characters in some (if the stars align). There is some elemental nonsense going on for some reason which imo adds nothing and just feels gimmicky.
Lastly I was surprised how bad it was to play the amount of moves ripped out was ridiculous also no ring outs (seriously wtf) and just guard (annoying but not as bad) the combat is just not satisfying it dosent feel like SC to me and dosent even bother to mask its quick cash grab nature.
I just dont get what they were doing with this they are taking the time to add the old characters back in (which they should have done for 5 instead of the horrendous character changes they did) but I just cant play the game its so unsatisfying the only hope is they use the created characters to make a SC6 with all the favourites back in and 5s awesome combat (but tweaked) and a further improved Character creator.
How this game got made is beyond me the actual pitch a single player fighting game itself is just ridiculous and water the combat down to make it more accessible just no the game is all about combat take that away and you take away from the game its not a hugely accessible genre they shouldnt be playing just to the hardcore ofc but damn this is not the right way Arc seem to be doing better in opening up the accessibility but it will never be for everyone.
I have uninstalled the game and never want to play it again its a bad idea poorly implemented and I am upset about the constant crap that Namco gives to the series its like they dont want it to succeed but whatever hopefully one day they will realise they are making a mistake by ignoring the SC franchise in favour of Tekken (still chasing those Tekken 3 sales no doubt) but I doubt it seems like they are trying to kill it for some unknown reason.
Ok thats my rant over so just wondering any other entries in franchises that make you go WTF were they thinking? Oh and if anyone is thinking of trying this game I would simply say dont just get SC2 HD if you want single player or local vs (online is horrendous) or SC5 if you want multi (online or offline) both are pretty cheap and much much better than this sorry excuse for a game.
