What would make a perfect First Person Shooter?

I have absolutely no experience in the whole, making of video games, but I do know what makes for a damn good one. Now, I would love to hear what the Escapist community thinks about what makes an amazing first person shooter.

My FPS wish list:
1. GUNS GUNS GUNS! Is it just me or do games these days seem to use the same selection of guns for multiplayer use? I can think of a few guns that would definitely make my trigger finger squeeze with joy. But a huge selection of guns Is meaningless without my next wish list item.
2. Balance is key. I love sniper rifles, in real life at least, I do not care much for the fact that in almost every game, sniper rifles are practically the hand of god. If a sniper rifle has super high damage, give the user low mobility and make them mount it on a Bipod (*cough Barret .50 Cal). And for gods sake, make melee a 2 hit kill. and do as Battlefield and Halo do, no kill streaks, just vehicles.
3. Grabbing and Compelling Campaign Mode. If a game cannot support it's self in it's single player aspect alone, as far as I'm concerned, it's an in complete game. A game needs a slew of fun single player options along with a fun and addicting but also balanced multiplayer experience. And please, put bots in the multiplayer, keep teams constantly balanced, this also allows the player to try the multiplayer out even if he/ she has no XBLA or PSN account.

keep your lists at a max of 5 wishes.

I wanna spend 2 hours customizing my guy
Takes place in space/future
Balance
Massive maps
Teamwork
The closest we've come in my opinion is Battlefield 2142

Future
Full customization of your character and there weapons (the weapons can't be super overpowered)
Lots of different armour that gives special bonuses (sheilds, jetpacks, teleporting, etc.)
The goal of a match is to capture the enemies base, and its completely destroyable, and at the center there are special attachments to your gun.
and so much more that i'm to lazy to post here....

this. regarding number 2, in crysis 2 there were killstreaks but you had to retrieve your kills dogtag, and to do that you had to walk over the corpse, so snipers never got killstreaks, which i like.

Multiplayer?
Take TF2 as a basis, and go from there.
I mean, I can't think of anything I'd change- I like the brightness, the pace, the ability to help the team in so many different ways...
I'd love to see more in addition though.
And the flarejumps back.

Single player?
The storytelling of the Half Life series, crossed with the charm and myth-ish feeling of Legend of Zelda.
Throw in really, really big, exotic architecture of Halo, as well as their vehicles.

Of course, that's just me. I want a colorful, adventurous experience whose environment compels me to play for others as much as myself, wether for my online teemates or for some loveable NPCs.

If you can't tell, grit has no appeal to me.

Though it is kinda nice when NewK comes to my rescue in Killing Floor.

1: There's lighting. And lots of it.
2: It's like everywhere and you're in the middle of all this lightning.
3: You can also shoot lightning.
4: And shoot like TEN other different kinds of guns.

For real though I just want to introduce something interesting that won't make me say, "Wait, I feel like I'm playing COD."

I wholly agree with your first point. A selection of 5-10 guns in a game ABOUT guns makes me sad. So make a selection of guns. A big selection. Doesn't matter if they're all balanced, or your first instinct is to pick the DE over the 1911, just let us choose. Give enemies varied weapons with attachments and let us pick our own between missions.

Allowing the purchasing and actual customization of your own would be an amazing feature that I wish more games, or any at all, would implement. Give a between-mission screen that lets you use money accumulated from completing objectives and other things, such as collectibles, to buy new guns, change the parts, attachments, and various other things.

Any game with the above two features alone would be an automatic buy for me. But I suppose if I had to think of any other, less important things.. which I do, since that's what the thread is about..

If it's gotta be a linear game, make it about something other than the military. Or make it something other than the US military. What about the Ukranian military? The Japanese? The Argentinan? Hell, make it about a PMC. That would go well with the above suggestions.

And to wrap it all up, an open world. Perhaps not a Just Cause sandbox, but a large, open map for every mission that lets you pick your own way to accomplish your objective. It would take a dedicated dev team to pull this off, because it could go the way of Far Cry 2.. aka "Head-on assault only, kthx".

And to deviate even further, toss the linear-game bit aside completely. Add a hub-based mission system. Several factions you can pick jobs from, each against another faction. Missions for assassination, assault, defense, all of those you can think of. Each one pays according to danger and urgency, and make the world dynamic so that if you help a faction take an outpost, it and the connecting roads are theirs. This goes great with the running "Mercenaries" or "PMC" theme I've been doing, too.

A new and different setting (or uncommonly used one) with an actual color palette. Mixing 2 things that normally don't go together like a western and sci-fi (like Firefly or Starhawk) is a good starting point as it immediately differentiates the game from other games.

You then new to come up with a new gameplay mechanic that your unique setting allows for (kinda like Starhawk's build a base mechanic). Or like Bioshock Infinite's tear mechanic. So, now you have both a unique setting and gameplay mechanic to set your game apart.

No health regen UNLESS technology in your setting allows for it.

And, bring back fucking FPS leaning, no reason why current FPSs don't have it.

Note: Starhawk could be a bust, who knows, but I love how their approach to the game; sci-fi western with a new gameplay mechanic of building bases plus the transforming mechs look awesome. Also they seem to be focusing on a quality story from watching a few developer videos about it. They could've just made Warhawk but in space.

Not an FPS, per se, but Dexter would make a great game. Yes, there is an iSomethingOrOther Dexter game, but come on! It would make a great PC game!

For a start, let me play as something other than a soldier.

So fucking sick of soldiers.

Multiplayer

if players sit in one spot for too long (camping), their score starts to drop and a giant neon arrow appears indicating position. They would also gain the permanent title, Dickless Wonder, next to their name until they grow up and learn to play.

If there aren't soldiers then its all about zombies. Soldiers are the only socially acceptable way to shoot people, otherwise people would probably ***** it's a terrorist theme.

I want it to be realistic. If I get hit in the arm I want my aim to become less precise, if I'm hit in the leg I want to limp, if I get hit in the head I want to be dead.

Nothing short of a headshot should instant kill (I'm looking at you, snipers and melee). Melee shouldn't even be effective, or at least should take the Reach assassination route, where an instant kill melee takes a few seconds. You should be able to carry lots of guns, but only one of each type. Snipers shouldn't work unless you're lying down. Also, health packs. No regenerating, no bloody goggles, no overshields.

Ever since i played Mirror's Edge i wanted a multiplayer slayer match that involved parkour. I'd love to try out Brink but that shit is 70 bux!!! and has no free demo, that just annoys the hell out of me.
Ofc a good single player story. (aka Halo1, HalfLife1/2)
Creative guns/abilities. (TF2's doin good in that)
Awesome lvl design.
And fun Physix (I do love that about halo),
not just explosions and vehicles tho, i want a game with water physix like Hydrophobia, i wanna trap ppl in a canyon, throw a granade at a damm like object and flush them away. I want a team slayer match on a bunch of moving objects swimming in a whirlpool..with sharks XD.
I also want stuff like shooting at a rope to drop an object down to block a river, and ye... possibilities r endless rly, (AKA AWESOME LVL DESIGN).

Pretty much just Call of Duty (4+) with way more weapons, attachments, maps, equipment, perks, etc.

Perhaps make it a MMOFPS, chuck in 100's of vehicle types (cars; racing and 'tank' type cars, actual tanks, heli's, bikes, etc)... So a MMO-Vehicle-FPS... or a MMO-Vehicle-FPS-RPG. Give it a nice leveling system. Skills/abilities, maybe even spells. Maybe make it a zombie apocalypse game, or one with mythological beings, or even just standard soldiers or aliens.

What I mainly want is a fair chunk of realism, an extremely hostile and unique world which constantly changes filled with intelligent NPC's and creatures, like S.T.A.L.K.E.R, but I also really want a shooter with a really neat weather system.

I wanna play something where it periodically floods and monsoons, and the terrain changes to suit.
It might freeze over, or become arid during certain times.

tons of baddies on the screen
ludicrous gibs
large areas
fast movement
hard and difficult
an inventory with crazy over-the-top weapons
no regenerating health, just health stations at intervals
