What would make the next Fallout great?

Firstly, yes I realize there are PC mods and console commands that could do a lot of this but I don't think it should be necessary to modify a game so greatly, and people with consoles would still be fucked. Aaanyways... Oh, and I ask you to read the entire post. After that flame me all you want.

Playing through Fallout 3 again in anticipation of New Vegas, I began taking note of things that I thought would make the game simply amazing. My basic Idea is that it plays way more like a realistic shooter (please don't kill me) than it does now. It doesn't sound like it, but I think this would greatly increase the immersion.

Who was the person who said everything in an rpg had to have so many numbers attached to it? I think the guns should not be so stat heavy. Rather than having one gun be 20 times more effective than all the others rendering them obsolete, the weapons should vary as much as in, say (please don't kill me again) modern warfare. Some weapons are clearly better than others, but all are viable. This way you can choose weapons based on their play style and looks rather than whether you'll get fucked up if you try using it against a swamp rapist or whatever. Playing Point Lookout on very hard I wanted to use the double barrel and lever rifle but it simply wasn't viable in any way. It took maybe 10+ shots (2 shells per shot mind you) to the head with the shotgun with 100 small guns skill to kill a damn tribal. Somewhat realistic damage wouldn't make the game any easier just more fun. You could use actual tactics and have firefights rather than: "ok, time to run backwards while I give you 30 shotgun shells to the face." There would still be all the different approaches to combat (ninja, rambo, scarface, *****, whatever...)

For this to work they would also have to work on the controls. Maybe I'm crazy, but controlling your character in this game seems incredibly sluggish and imprecise.

So those are my thoughts. Give feedback or pose your own.

If I were being picky and anal, I'd say that trying to minimise glitches would be a nice step. But I also understand that in a game as big as Fallout, it would be quite a thing to ask.

Also my childish side quite liked some of the glitches, except when they occur in the middle of a firefight

Having just read Shamus Young's most recent Experienced Points article, less voice-acting and more freedom...

I say we let Obsidian Entertainment do what they think is best considering that it's a splinter of the original Black Isle Studios... or at least they have a few of the original guys there. From what I've gathered they're adding things from the original two Fallouts into New Vegas, things I wanted in Fallout 3. To me, they're on the right track and know what they're doing.

Now, it's only up to Bethesda to leave them to do it... and I pray that they don't handle this like Lucas Arts did with Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. We don't need another debacle like that.

More of an even balance between enemies for example, post Broken Steel random enemy fights were quite well matched and it could have been anyones game (unless a Deathclaw got involved).

Spawn a Super Mutant Overlord in the centre of Evergreen Mills and I could put money on it walking out with so much as a scratch. Can see why those little s**ts from Lamplight shut vault 87 off, place is crawling with them!

A Raider Elite or Deathclaw Guardian would balance it out a bit better.

Petty issue I know...

All I want is a proper flashlight.FO3 was a great game but exploring miles of caves/tunnels with the pathetic Pip-boy light was annoying after a while. Is it too much to ask for a light that illuminates more then 2 feet in front of you

More natural combat, and less durable everything. I want to shoot something in the chest and have it goddamn die!

Iron sights have been confirmed, so that's good...

Better animations maybe?

Basically, I agree with everything you said. If they have the time, they can produce a great game. They may not get all the new IP stuff, but they can take a great game and make it better. If only they had more time to finish KOTOR 2.... /sigh

I agree with the OP regarding weapons: make it so that all weapons are pretty lethal, and all are useful in combat. Towards the end of FO3 there were only a select few gun worth bothering with, and that's annoying, since I prefer using the weapons I like, choosing them based on the pros, cons and look/feel. Additionally, completely realistic damage is a no-no, but I'd like to see the damage threshold for the NPCs and player alike lowered considerably, because having to blast an unarmoured man several times in the facw with a shotgun pisses me off, and kills immersion.

By the way, iron sights are confirmed and New Vegas is said to have more response and fluid aiming.

Better combat, making the areas a bit more varied, some more voice acting (FO3 wasn't as desperate as Oblivion for VA, but it still had a few blips), not killing off the best voice actor within a few hours, if the new Hardcore mode makes the land feel a bit more desperate, S.T.A.L.K.E.R-esque even. I'd like that.

"Hardcore Mode"

This would be the "Realistic" you're looking for. This isn't a difficulty, but a modification, with this mode on:

-Ammo now has weight
-Stimpaks heal over time rather than the second you use them
-Broken limbs can only be healed with Doctor's Bags or by a doctor
-Characters dehydrate over time, and water needs to be consumed regularly

There's probably more, but to my knowledge, this is all that is revealed about the mode so far. Naturally, there will be an achievement for beatingthe whole game with hardcore mode on. ;)

Well, when you play Oblivion you could pick up books and read them, interact with more characters and in general do more things. I felt that Fallout 3 was rather limited and overuse of repetitive graphics. What I propose, in short, is to have more stuff to do. More content, bigger levels, and let's put it 100 years into the future where things are cleaned up now and civilization is back on track to keep things interesting.

I'd really just like to see more content, more storyline, more stuff to do in general. That's about it, the game mechanics are fine as is. (I think the combat system is okay although I see your point too, it's a beef I have with MW2 actually that guns don't do realistic damage there either.)

If they removed the glitches that plagued Fallout 3.

It won't happen, but it would make it great.

I think you mean Fallout 4, and I suggest putting it in a different country or a different part of the U.S.; like the Pacific Northwest, New England, or maybe Canada.
