So someone I know is planning to do some sort of car scam to make money. Im the kind of person who hasnt committed a crime in their whole life, and I know what they are doing is wrong but theres not much I can say to change their minds - even though they could get into a lot of trouble.

So my question is, what would you do if someone you knew was going to do something illegal?
Tell them not to do it? Threaten to tell someone (even if you really wouldnt)?
After all its for their own good right?

I would tell them that it is not in their best interest to do it and if they didn't listen, realize that it is not my life they are screwing up. If someone really wants to do something, I say let them. You will be able to sleep easy knowing that you, at least, told them it was not a good idea. You don't have to lecture them, just simply tell them it is stupid idea and see what they do with that information.

Don't threaten anyone with anything if you don't have the conviction to carry out the threat, because in their eyes you become a weaker person, you threatened them but nothing came of it therefore you don't have the confidence to do anything you say.

If you threaten to hit someone, hit them.
If you say your going to go to the police, go to the police.

Friendship in these situations is temporary, because they do not respect your advice so I'd advise you to tell them to fuck off out of your life, only bad shit can come from associating yourself with them because they will know "you'll give them one last try" everysingle time.

No hes not scamming or hurting people, just a scam so he dont pay for certain things. I dont really wana say exactly what to give people ideas. But I just dont like the idea that I know someone is doing something wrong.

Might as well let them. If they pay their taxes, don't drink drive, and are otherwise a respectable citizen, then why not let them scam a little back?

I think it depends on the victims, car scam could be anything from luring money out of insurance companies to tricking first buyers. If it's the first, he won't get away with it, insurance companies are good at catching those guys. If it's the latter, then he's just a dick.

I'd just call the police and give an anonymous tipoff. I was raised to obey the law, and I've been there when my parents have even threatened my brother with the police when he's done wrong stuff. While my younger brother is by no means a hooligan or criminal, he did occasionally steal stuff (usually insignificant stuff like my dad's beer or my mum's chocolates) from them when he was younger. Eventually my parents said if he carried on stealing stuff from them, they'd go to the police. He was only young at the time but he never stole anything from them again...

If they're going to hurt someone, stop them. Even though they're my friend I can't have them going after innocent people, that isn't right.

... Unless their targets are jerks...

Warn them against it for legal reasons. I wouldn't assist them. If they did not heed my warnings, go ahead. I'm not calling the cops or anything if they're my friends.

Report him.
Its the best thing to do. A scam is a scam, I don't care if its to a "company" that company is made up of people, and it will hurt them, hurt the people who work for them, and the people who work with them. shareholders and stakeholders and all that.
Just because its a company doesn't mean people have the right to mess with them.

If its a person/people report them too...

So basically just report :-/

Well yea warn them, strongly.

If it something that is going to hurt people, and they did not heed your advice then i guess i would consider either trying to warn off people that he is trying to scam or going directly to the police.

If you want money get a job, con artists are scum and usually prey on the old and the stupid. Stupid i can kinda forgive, but if anyone tried to scam my grandmother i can tell you i would not be lenient or forgiving.

Suppose you could blackmail him also :p pay me or else. Scam the scammer.

I wouldn't grass, I'd try and politely point out that getting human enemas from men named Molly isn't my idea of a good time either. But at the end of the day it's their choice. Of course from a legal perspective I should tell the nearest copper that this person is a Bad Person (tm) and that they should prevent his heinous act. But then I was never much for police officers.

If this is a scam, this implies he's going to scam someone, meaning that you could have prevented someone innocent being abused for personal gain

I'd confront them about it, and tell them you're going to stop them if they try. If they care enough about your relationship, then they'll hopefully stop

If they go ahead, then they've committed a crime AND spurned you, so it's okay to 'grass' on them (though I hate this culture of 'tattle-tales', Upholding the law shouldn't be a bad thing, damnit!)
