What would you expect..

What would you expect, nay, demand from a game that is trying to show off its engine? It will probably be short, say Portal short with a small plot.

Graphics, mechanics, gameplay?...

Edit: What sort of graphics, what sort of character creation/look, what kind of gameplay (NPCs with perfect AI or no party at all). Please elaborate.

Graphics and game-play I guess. The story isn't usually determined by the engine except for the level of what can and cannot be designed.

I'd expect a tech demo.

The point of the game is to show a new engine rather than make a large game that isn't showing off anything new

Tech demos are usually too rough or incomplete to show off a lot. A game would allow more gimmicks being introduced and it would show performance on regular computers rather than say the server it was made on.
