Depending on what kind of group they fall under, either Half-Life 2 or Elite Beat Agents.

Both are relatively easy to pick up and play and has plenty to show.

Bioshock

Great graphics. An amazing story. And it is easy. So a new gamer won't become frustrated by getting smoked, reload, get smoked again, reload. For me beating a game is what really encouraged me to keep gaming.

Intro to gaming? Halo.

Before anyone even opens their mouth. Halo. Simplest game in the universe, and it even manages to entertain. Sometimes.

Definitely depends on the person but id recommend a puzzler or a platformer for a 1st timer. Simple controls, easy to get into, long-lasting appeal. My personal 1st time favourites: Tetris and Super Mario.

Halo I suppose because it has a multitude of difficult modes, it's simple, well made, and leads people to try new and better games. I'd also recommend playing something like Smash Bros Melee with a few friends. That was actually one of the first games I played and it built my hand eye coordination up so well I could play anything. However I definitely think the best thing to play would be a console FPS because it builds skill with a controller. After you play one of the multitude you can pretty much play anything.

Welcome! Welcome to city sevent- I mean, the Escapist!

One of the old cartridge games would be the best, in my oppinion. But, if the person is one of those twitchy, impatient types, perhaps a jump to a PSone platformer would be better.

First off, welcome to The Escapist.

I'd really need to know more about your interests to answer that question. Is there anything about gaming that brought it to your attention in the first place? Do you find yourself wanting to slay beasts or jam on a plastic guitar? Maybe slay dragons and rescue fair maidens (you get the point) or would you rather jump around platforms and shoot fireballs at mushrooms? Are you "Wow'd" by graphics or does that not mean anything to you? (Does CGI do anything for you when you see it in movies? Or do you prefer the good ol' fashioned use of puppets and creativity?) Do you like historically accurate portrayals or do you see yourself in an imaginative fictitious world?

Just a little bit about your interests can help make this conversation go along way.

It couldn't hurt starting off with some user-friendly casual games, like Mario or Zelda. But at the same time, that may scare you away from gaming altogether if you don't happen to like them. Let us know a little bit about you and why you'd be interested in gaming and I bet we can make some great recommendations for you.
You misunderstand me. I'm not the one new to games. I'm asking if you knew someone who was, what would you suggest. Just FYI my first game was Sonic the Hedgehog. I still love it even though every one after Sonic Adventure 2 has made me weep.
Well, I know even less about this hypothetical person. So I'm really at a loss.

This is my first post here at The Escapist and I'm sure this question has come up many times but I would like to see some answers anyway. If you knew someone who has never had any prior interest in gaming but they came to you for a recommendation for the first game they should play; what would you tell them?
Motorstorm, press button tilt controller, my nan was amazed by it... she was pretty natty with the big rig too!

Portal, Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2 Ep 1, Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress 2 .... Anybody noticing a pattern here?

Anyway, One of my friends came over to me a few years back and said "What kind of games do you like? Because I bought a second-hand PS2 and I want some games to play."

This was the first games console he had ever owned. So, I told him to buy Call Of Duty: Finest Hour, because I was having plenty of fun with that at the time.

So anyway, his first time ever playing a game, in a local multiplayer match, HE ABSOLOUTLEY SLAUGHTERED ME.

I think you already bitched at him, and not just on the fact that this thread is overdone.

I would probably recommend the Half-Life games, since when I want someone to start gaming, I'd have to give them a good game, so they'd play more games.
I liked the Half-Life series, and I hope that whoever wants a recommendation, likes it also, and so asks for new games to play, because he/she thought Half-Life was good, and thus, thinks that gaming is good.

Really? Simplest game in the universe? I think Pong might be a little more simple.

I recommend Left 4 Dead.

Awesome gameplay, decent graphics, Lotta replay, and the satisfaction of knowing that you and your team did awesome.

I point them in the direction of independent games like Guardian of Paradise, Kyntt, Cave story, Feed the Head, or even Torus Trooper...well as long as they are not prone to motion sickness.
